Cristian Volpato Faces Cocaine Allegations Following Speeding Incidents in Sydney

Cristian Volpato, the 22-year-old who made waves for Australia during the recent World Cup, reportedly tested positive for cocaine after being stopped for speeding in Sydney. Volpato, originally from Sydney but having played for Italy’s Under-20 team before switching to Australia, became a standout player in the tournament.

Details of the Traffic Stops

Police in New South Wales said Volpato was caught driving at 109km/h on the Anzac Bridge early Friday morning, exceeding the speed limit by 50km/h. When stopped around 1am, he underwent a roadside drug test that allegedly detected cocaine. Authorities confirmed a second sample is set for further analysis. Following this, his driver’s license was suspended for six months.

Earlier the same night, at approximately 11pm Thursday, Volpato had already been stopped for speeding more than 20km/h over the limit. Although he was given an alcohol test then, it came back negative. He received an infringement notice at that time.

Background and Career

Volpato plays club football for Sassuolo in Italy. Born in Sydney, he initially represented Italy at youth level after joining Roma in 2020. His decision to switch allegiance to Australia before the World Cup made him one of the tournament’s notable new faces.
