Cristian Romero Joins Atletico Madrid for €40 Million
Atletico have their new enforcer. The Spanish club have completed the signing of centre-back Cristian Romero from Tottenham, sealing a long-term deal that runs until 30 June 2031 in a move worth up to €40 million.
The 28-year-old Argentina international passed his medical at the Vithas-Invictum High-Performance Sports Medicine Centre in Madrid, then headed to the Riyadh Air Metropolitano offices to sign the contract that pulls him out of north London and drops him straight into Diego Simeone’s back line.
From London pillar to Europa League king
Romero leaves Spurs after five seasons that transformed him from a promising Serie A defender into one of Europe’s most feared centre-backs.
He arrived at Tottenham on loan for the 2021-22 campaign, impressed immediately, and was made permanent soon after. By the time he walked away, he had stacked up 156 appearances, 13 goals and seven assists in all competitions — serious output for a central defender whose reputation rests on aggression, timing and leadership rather than numbers.
His defining chapter in England came in 2024-25. That season, Romero anchored the defence as Spurs finally ended a 31-year wait for a European trophy, lifting the Europa League. He didn’t just collect a medal; he dominated the competition. UEFA named him Europa League’s best player and man of the match in the final, a double accolade that underlined his status among the continent’s elite defenders.
A career built on constant escalation
Romero’s rise has followed a relentless upward curve.
Born in Cordoba, he broke through at Club Atletico Belgrano in 2016, quickly earning a move to Serie A with Genoa. Juventus snapped him up in 2019, but his development truly accelerated during loan spells back at Genoa and then Atalanta, where his blend of front-foot defending and aerial power started to terrify forwards on a weekly basis.
The 2020-21 season with Atalanta proved decisive. Romero was voted Serie A’s best defender, a distinction that opened the door to the Premier League and his switch to Spurs. Serial winner with Argentina
At international level, Romero’s record is staggering.
He has earned 58 senior caps for Argentina and has never finished below second place in any international tournament he has contested. His honours list reads like a golden era: the 2022 World Cup, two Copa America titles, the Finalissima, and a runners-up finish at the 2026 World Cup.
Those campaigns have hardened him in the most intense environments the sport can offer. Finals, knockouts, penalty shoot-outs, the weight of a footballing nation on his shoulders — Romero has carried it, and often thrived under it.
