Cristian Orozco Impresses in Manchester United Debut

Cristian Orozco has wasted no time showing Manchester United what they have on their hands.

The Colombian midfielder, finally able to complete his move from Fortaleza after turning 18 earlier this summer, has already marked his unofficial debut with a goal for the club’s Under-21s in a behind-closed-doors friendly against Aston Villa U21s.

United ran out 5-0 winners as preparations for the new campaign gathered pace, and Orozco was on the scoresheet in the rout. A defensive midfielder by trade, he still found room to make his mark going the other way, capping an encouraging first outing in red.

He was not alone. Chido Obi, who struck twice in a recent win over Ipswich, kept his hot streak alive against Villa’s youngsters, again finding the net against Premier League opposition. Ashton Missin also grabbed a brace, while Amir Ibragimov converted to complete a dominant performance.

Orozco’s arrival has been a long time coming. United agreed a deal for the highly rated teenager last year, with director of football Jason Wilcox driving an assertive push to bring in overseas talent. The club eventually tempted the Colombia Under-17s captain away from his homeland despite his limited senior experience.

He joined after making just five first-team appearances for Fortaleza, his last competitive game coming in May in a Copa Colombia draw with Cucuta Deportivo. Those slim numbers underline how raw he still is – and why United are determined not to rush him.

Behind the scenes, the plan is clear: Orozco will be given space to grow, not thrown straight into the first-team spotlight. The pathway is crowded in any case. Old Trafford chief Michael Carrick has already strengthened the heart of midfield, spending big on Andrey Santos before moving quickly to add Youri Tielemans.

United triggered the £35 million release clause in Tielemans’ Aston Villa contract, adding another proven option in the area Orozco hopes one day to patrol.

For now, the teenager’s job is simple: keep impressing at youth level, keep adapting, keep knocking on the door. His first goal in United colours is a start.

The wait for a senior debut will be longer. The question is how ready he’ll be when that chance finally arrives.
