Coventry and Crystal Palace Strengthen Defences After Opening-Day Defeats
Coventry and Crystal Palace moved quickly on Wednesday, shoring up fragile defences after bruising opening-day defeats in the Premier League.
At Coventry, experience was the order of the day. The newly promoted club have brought in Ethan Pinnock from Brentford for an undisclosed fee, banking on the 33-year-old’s nous to steady Frank Lampard’s back line and help keep the Sky Blues in the top flight.
"I'm really excited to join Coventry City and continue my footballing journey with this great club," he said in a statement, leaning into the scale of the club’s return. "After 25 years, the club are back in the Premier League, and I know how much it must mean to everyone involved with the club and the supporters. I can't wait to be part of it."
Coventry’s priority is blunt: avoid an immediate drop back to the Championship. Pinnock, hardened by Premier League battles with Brentford, slots straight into that mission.
Across the capital, Crystal Palace turned to Chelsea to reinforce their own defence, securing Axel Disasi on a season-long loan.
The 28-year-old Frenchman is no stranger to a mid-season reset. He spent part of last campaign on loan at West Ham, making 17 appearances after arriving in January, and now crosses London again in search of regular minutes and a fresh platform.
Two clubs, two different paths, but the same early-season reality: if they are to recover from opening-day setbacks, their new centre-backs will have to deliver from the first whistle.
