Philippe Coutinho Joins Santos, Reuniting with Neymar
Philippe Coutinho has completed a surprise return to Brazil, joining Santos for the rest of the season and linking up at last with his long-time national team partner Neymar at club level.
The Brazilian side confirmed the deal on Monday and wasted no time turning it into a moment. In a video released by Santos, Coutinho walks into the dressing room to find Neymar waiting for him, the two embracing as if rewinding a decade of shared memories in yellow shirts.
"If it's a dream, I don't want to wake up," Neymar tells Coutinho in the clip, a line that instantly lit up social media and underlined the sense of nostalgia around the move.
For years, their careers have run on parallel tracks without quite touching at club level. Coutinho spent five seasons at Liverpool, becoming one of the Premier League’s standout playmakers before his big-money move to Barcelona in January 2018. By then, the Camp Nou door had already closed on any partnership with Neymar, who left Barca for Paris St Germain in August 2017.
They dazzled together for Brazil instead, but the club link-up always felt like a what-if. Until now.
Coutinho’s return comes after a short and stuttering spell back at his first club, Vasco da Gama, in 2024. He left Vasco in February this year, still searching for rhythm and a setting that suited him. His last appearance for Brazil came back in March 2022, a reminder of how far he has drifted from the spotlight he once commanded in Europe.
Neymar, now 34, made his own emotional comeback to Santos last year, stepping back into the club that launched his career. He later announced his international retirement following Brazil’s World Cup exit in July, closing one chapter even as another opened on home soil.
Now Santos have both of them under the same roof, finally uniting two of the most gifted Brazilian attackers of their generation in the white shirt of the club that shaped one and now offers a lifeline to the other.
