Chris Sutton Slams Celtic's Timing on Arne Engels Transfer to West Ham
Arne Engels is on the brink of a £22million switch to West Ham – and Chris Sutton is livid about when Celtic have chosen to cash in.
The 22-year-old has been a standout at Parkhead, a driving force in midfield and one of the club’s biggest success stories of last season. Seven goals, eight assists, 46 games across all competitions – no surprise Nuno Espirito Santo wants him in East London as quickly as possible.
The fee, a record-breaking sum for a Championship club, is agreed. The paperwork is rolling. Engels is heading for E20. That’s exactly what infuriates Sutton.
“Unthinkable” call before Champions League play-off
For the former Celtic striker, it isn’t the size of the offer or the player’s ambition that grates. It’s the calendar.
Martin O’Neill’s side are about to walk into a Champions League play-off against LASK with their season’s biggest prize on the line – and, as Sutton sees it, with one hand tied behind their back.
Speaking to the Daily Record, Sutton did not hold back:
"There's so much on the line, it's unthinkable to go in to this match in a weaker position – but that's what is going to happen with Engels gone.
"I get that it's big money and I understand why West Ham want him now, with the Championship kicking off this weekend.
“But that's not Celtic's problem. They had to look after themselves."
It’s a stinging verdict, but also a backhanded compliment. Sutton’s anger doubles as a glowing endorsement of Engels. In his eyes, Celtic are stripping themselves of a key weapon at the worst possible moment, while West Ham are picking up a player ready to step straight into a promotion fight.
West Ham move gathers pace
From West Ham’s point of view, the urgency is obvious. Their league campaign starts on Sunday, and Nuno wants Engels in the building, on the training pitch and in contention as soon as possible.
If the Hammers can get him registered before noon on 15 August, Engels could make his debut against Burnley. Miss that cut-off, and attention turns to the Charlton fixture on 22 August, or the EFL Cup tie with Southampton on 25 August.
Either way, he won’t be arriving cold. Engels has already banked a full pre-season with Celtic and has two Scottish Premiership matches under his belt. Match sharp, rhythm intact, no need for a long bedding-in period. West Ham are buying form, not just potential.
Celtic, by contrast, are losing exactly that at the most delicate stage of their campaign.
Celtic’s dilemma laid bare
Sutton’s frustration reflects a wider unease among the Celtic support. Europe is the barometer. Reaching the Champions League group stage shapes finances, prestige, even recruitment. The LASK play-off is the club’s biggest task of the season, and they are going into it without one of their most influential performers.
The money is huge. The timing, for those around the G40 club, is brutal.
Engels’ departure underlines something else too: even in the Championship, West Ham’s pull remains powerful. They can tempt a rising Belgian star out of a Champions League-chasing Celtic side and drop him straight into a second-tier promotion push.
Celtic get their fee. West Ham get their man. The real verdict will come when the floodlights hit those Champions League nights – and when the promotion race in East London starts to bite.
