Shay Given Says Chelsea Would Seize Chance to Sign Jordan Pickford if Interested

Former Premier League goalkeeper Shay Given has said that Chelsea would eagerly pursue Everton and England goalkeeper Jordan Pickford if the player showed any sign of wanting to leave. Pickford, now 32, is about to start his tenth season at Goodison Park after moving from Sunderland in 2017 for £25 million. Since then, he has become a consistent figure for Everton.

Given Wonders Why Transfer Talk Is Quiet

Speaking with BOYLE Sports, Given expressed surprise at the lack of transfer rumors involving Pickford despite his strong performances. He noted Pickford’s long tenure at Everton and being England’s number one goalkeeper for many years, as well as breaking the England World Cup appearances record.

"Jordan Pickford has been at Everton for nearly 10 years now and he’s been England number one for most of that time too and he broke the appearance record for England World Cup games. It is strange that we haven’t heard of other clubs moving in for him during that time."

Given suggested maybe Pickford feels settled at Everton or bids have just not surfaced publicly. He pointed out that goalkeepers often get better with age and Pickford still has many years left at the top level.

"You’d think Chelsea would be on the phone tomorrow and jump at the chance to sign him if he gave them any encouragement."

Pickford's Qualities Praised

Given recalled some of Pickford’s remarkable saves, such as a tip over the crossbar from Sandro Tonali at St James’ Park last season. He described Pickford as a "Steady Eddie," meaning reliable and steady rather than flashy, which he considered a strength.

"When you’ve got a goalkeeper who is that steady, it’s a real plus, and he’s got a real personality. Some people say it can spill over at times, but it shows his passion and hunger and desire for the team to do well. It’s his will to win, you can’t coach that or teach it. It’s just who he is."

Pickford's Commitment to Everton

Pickford himself has expressed his dedication to Everton. After a match against Brentford in April, he spoke warmly about his relationship with the club and fans.

"Everton’s been so good to me, and I’ve been so good to Everton, we’ve got a great relationship. I love the fans, the fanbase is quality. I’ve got the best chant that Everton fans sing. It takes some doing to get an Everton chant, let me tell you that."

Looking Ahead: Everton’s New Season

Everton will start their 2026–27 Premier League season at home against Crystal Palace on August 22. Pickford’s experience and leadership between the sticks are expected to be crucial as Everton face a challenging campaign. His role will be central to maintaining defensive strength throughout the season.
