Chelsea in Talks for Italy Defender Honest Ahanor

Chelsea have opened talks with Atalanta over highly rated Italy defender Honest Ahanor, sounding out both the Serie A club and the player’s camp as they explore a potential deal.

The 18-year-old has quickly become one of the most coveted young defenders in Europe, and Atalanta know it. Earlier in the summer they turned down a €34m bid from Brighton, a clear signal of how firmly they intend to hold their ground on one of their brightest prospects.

Sporting director Cristiano Giuntoli has been blunt about the club’s stance. Since arriving for his first season in Bergamo, alongside new coach Maurizio Sarri, he has stressed that Atalanta do not want to lose their best or most promising players – Ahanor very much in that category.

Atalanta invested heavily to get him. They brought Ahanor in from Genoa in 2025 for €16m, betting early on his blend of power, timing and composure. That bet has paid off quickly: he has already racked up 28 Serie A appearances and, in June, made his senior debut for Italy under caretaker coach Silvio Baldini.

His versatility only drives the price higher. Ahanor can operate as a left wing-back, offering energy and width, or tuck inside as a left-sided centre-back in a back three, where his reading of the game and aggression in duels stand out. For a Chelsea side still reshaping its defensive core, that profile is exactly the kind of piece they have been chasing.

There is also a recent line of communication between the two clubs. Earlier this summer, Chelsea and Atalanta struck a €60m agreement for Marco Palestra, who swapped the Gewiss Stadium for Stamford Bridge. That deal established a working relationship and a benchmark: Atalanta will sell, but only at their price.

Now Chelsea are testing just how high that price might be for Ahanor, a teenager already trusted in Serie A and on the international stage. Atalanta have shown they will not be bullied out of their position.

The question is simple: how far are Chelsea prepared to go for the next cornerstone of their defence?
