Chelsea’s summer overhaul shows no sign of slowing. While new faces arrive at Cobham, another forward has been moved on for good.
Fofana Era Ends Quietly
David Datro Fofana’s Chelsea career is over almost before it began.
The club has agreed a permanent deal with Servette FC for the 23-year-old striker, according to Fabrizio Romano. The fee is €2.5 million plus €1 million in add-ons, drawing a line under a spell that never really got going.
“Servette FC have completed deal to sign David Datro Fofana from Chelsea on a permanent move,” Romano reported on August 28, adding bluntly: “It’s over between cfc and Fofana.”
Fofana arrived from Molde in January 2023 for a fee in excess of £10 million and signed a seven-year contract worth $10.9 million, running to 2028. On paper, he was a long-term project. On the pitch, he barely featured.
As The Athletic’s Simon Johnson highlighted, Fofana made just four appearances for Chelsea. The rest of his time was spent on a carousel of loans: Union Berlin, Burnley, Goztepe, Fatih Karagumruk and Strasbourg. The pattern made the club’s intentions clear.
“Chelsea had earmarked Datro Fofana for a permanent sale this window,” Johnson wrote. Now that plan is complete.
Martinez Arrival Raises the Stakes in Goal
While Fofana heads for Switzerland, a World Cup winner is walking through the door.
Chelsea have struck a deal with Aston Villa to sign Argentina goalkeeper Emiliano Martinez, a major move in a position that already looked settled with Robert Sanchez. Martinez was in London on August 28 for medical tests and to sign his contract.
“Emiliano Martínez, in London today for medical tests and then contract signing at Chelsea,” Romano reported, stating the deal runs until June 2028 with an option for a further season.
The signing instantly throws Sanchez’s status into doubt. He arrived as the No 1. Now he has one of the game’s most combative, vocal keepers challenging him for the shirt. One of them will not be happy by October.
Midfield Target: Lamine Camara Talks Ongoing
The rebuild does not stop at the back.
Chelsea have held talks with AS Monaco over midfielder Lamine Camara as they look to add another option in the middle of the pitch before the September 1 deadline. The two clubs met on Thursday to discuss the 20-year-old as a possible target.
“Chelsea and AS Monaco had a meeting on Thursday to discuss Lamine Camara as possible option for CFC midfield,” Romano said on August 28.
Monaco, though, are not resigned to losing him. They still hope to keep Camara and are themselves in negotiations with Tottenham over Pape Matar Sarr. Chelsea know time is tight. If they want Camara, they will have to move quickly.
One of the Window’s Busiest Clubs
This is what a reset looks like. Chelsea have been one of the most aggressive operators in the Premier League as the window ticks towards its close.
They have added a high-profile goalkeeper, trimmed a bloated squad by moving on a young forward who never established himself, and remain active in midfield discussions. The strategy is clear: fewer passengers, more players trusted by Xabi Alonso and the current regime.
Yet the biggest question of all still hangs over Stamford Bridge.
Enzo Fernández: The Saga That Won’t Go Away
Enzo Fernández remains at the centre of intense speculation, with Manchester City circling. His absence from Chelsea’s Carabao Cup tie against Luton only cranked up the noise around his future.
“We assess individually, collectively what is the best for the team for tonight, what is better for other players that were playing,” Alonso said when asked about leaving Fernández out, speaking to ESPN. “It was our decision, from myself and from the club.”
Chelsea have so far resisted any offer that does not match their valuation. The stance is firm. The market, though, can change in days, sometimes in hours, as the deadline looms.
Fofana is gone. Martinez is in. Camara is in play. And somewhere in the middle of it all, the Enzo decision still waits. How different will this squad look when the window finally slams shut?
