Chelsea Secure Morgan Rogers in Stunning £117m Deal
Chelsea have landed Morgan Rogers in a dramatic late strike that has left Arsenal stunned and scrambling for alternatives, according to Fabrizio Romano.
What looked for weeks like an Arsenal-led pursuit has ended with the Aston Villa forward heading to Stamford Bridge in a £117m deal, signing a six-year contract with an option for a further season. Chelsea moved with speed and without compromise. Arsenal hesitated on the price – and paid for it.
Chelsea go “all in” as Arsenal stall
Arsenal had been widely viewed as favourites for Rogers throughout the summer. Romano reports that personal terms between the player and the Gunners were never an issue, and that Mikel Arteta even held direct talks with the England international over recent months as he pushed to make Rogers a key attacking addition.
The plan in north London was clear enough: after closing in on Christos Tzolis from Club Brugge, Arsenal wanted Rogers as a versatile option across the frontline and in the pockets behind the striker. A flexible piece for Arteta’s intricate system.
But when it came to the fee, Arsenal tried to play the market.
Romano says Arsenal’s intention was to bid around £90m, with a ceiling of roughly £100m. Aston Villa, though, had a firmer number in mind – and Chelsea were willing to meet it. Over the weekend, the London rivals agreed to pay £117m, triggering a rapid exchange of documents between Chelsea and Villa.
“The next 24 hours are going to be the 24 hours of Morgan Rogers as a new Chelsea player,” Romano said on his YouTube channel, outlining how quickly the move accelerated. He described the deal as “completed” and set to be signed on Monday, with all the paperwork already in motion.
From Villa’s perspective, Romano reports that the club view it as “excellent business.” Chelsea, for their part, believe they have secured a “fantastic player” for the long term.
For Arsenal, this was not just a miss. It was a jolt. Romano calls it “a big surprise” inside the club, with the hierarchy now forced to react in a market that is already moving at full speed.
Chelsea’s strategy was blunt and decisive. Romano explains that they “decided to go all in immediately” and that the only way to prevent Arsenal from launching a late counter was to close the agreement inside 24 hours. They did exactly that.
Arsenal pivot to Yan Diomande as PSG lead the race
With Rogers gone, Arsenal have started to pivot. The club have now made enquiries for RB Leipzig winger Yan Diomande, with Romano detailing the current state of play around the Ivorian.
Right now, Paris Saint-Germain are ahead. Romano says PSG already have a verbal agreement on contract terms with Diomande and have been in that position for three or four weeks. The relationship between PSG and Leipzig is described as very good, helped by the Xavi Simons deal and other recent business, but there is still no agreement on the transfer fee.
That gap between player and club is where opportunity usually lives. Arsenal know it well. Romano points out that “sometimes you can have an agreement with the player but not with the club,” citing the Rogers saga as the latest example: Arsenal had no issues on personal terms, but Aston Villa never received a bid to match Chelsea’s offer.
With Diomande, the onus is now firmly on PSG to finish what they started. Romano says they “remain the clear favourites,” yet he also notes that “more clubs are calling every day” to test whether they can enter the race.
Arsenal are among those clubs. Enquiries have been made in recent days, and there are other sides working quietly in the background. PSG still hold the strongest hand, but the field is tightening.
Arsenal have already learned what happens when a rival decides to move first and move hard. The question now is whether they are prepared to be that club in the Diomande chase – or whether Chelsea’s hijack of Rogers becomes the defining warning shot of their summer.
