Fenerbahce Denies Jamie Gittens Transfer Rumors

Fenerbahce have moved swiftly and angrily to shut down rumours linking them with a move for Chelsea winger Jamie Gittens, branding the reports “completely unfounded” and accusing sections of the media of trying to drag the club into a fake transfer saga.

The 22-year-old had been loosely linked with a summer switch to Istanbul despite only arriving in the Premier League last year in a £51.5million deal from Borussia Dortmund. After a bruising first season at Stamford Bridge, the idea of a reset in Turkey began to gather traction online.

Fenerbahce were having none of it.

Fenerbahce hit back

As speculation gathered pace on social media, the Turkish giants issued a sharply worded statement on Saturday, flatly denying any interest in Gittens and taking aim at what they described as attempts to “manipulate” the club.

“Reports circulating in some media outlets today regarding our club's interest in Chelsea FC player Jamie Gittens are completely unfounded and do not reflect the truth,” the statement read.

The club then widened the target.

“We once again clearly state that attempts to manipulate Fenerbahçe Sports Club through false transfer claims and artificially created agendas will have no effect.

“Fenerbahçe conducts its sporting structure, transfer policy, and future planning in all branches, especially football, in accordance with its own strategy, needs, and established programs.

“Therefore, we expect this approach of using our club's name to create public opinion and steer Fenerbahçe towards certain directions to cease.

“Our sole focus right now is our match against Gençlerbirliği in the first week of the Trendyol Super League.

“We respectfully request that our great Fenerbahçe fans disregard such unfounded news and continue their support for our teams only by considering the statements made through our club's official channels.”

In one sweep, the club killed the Gittens story and reminded everyone that their attention is locked on the league opener, not on a Premier League winger who isn’t in their plans.

Gittens’ Chelsea struggle

For Gittens, the noise around a possible exit only underlined how difficult his first year in England has been.

The winger made 27 appearances for Chelsea last season across all competitions, but his numbers never matched the size of the transfer fee: one goal and five assists. The rhythm he showed in Germany never really surfaced in blue.

Injuries did not help. A hamstring problem kept him out for more than 100 days, costing him 22 games and stalling any momentum just as he tried to establish himself. His last competitive outing for Chelsea came on January 31, a stark marker of how long he has been on the fringes.

The result is a familiar Premier League story: a big-money signing, a stuttering debut campaign, and immediate questions about his future.

Alonso’s call to make

Now Xabi Alonso has walked into that situation with a decision looming over him. Keep Gittens and try to rebuild him, or quietly move him on after a single season?

Early signs suggest the new Chelsea head coach is at least willing to give him a proper look.

Alonso has used Gittens in five of Chelsea’s six pre-season friendlies so far this summer. The winger has responded with one goal and one assist, modest numbers but enough to hint at a player who can still affect games when fit and confident.

Those minutes matter. They show Gittens is not being frozen out, not yet. Instead of boarding a flight to Istanbul, he is fighting for a place in Alonso’s first competitive squad.

With Fenerbahce’s denial drawing a firm line through one possible exit route, the focus turns back to London. Chelsea open their Premier League campaign against Fulham at Craven Cottage on Monday, August 24, and Gittens has played his way into contention to be involved.

The transfer noise has been silenced for now. The next verdict on Jamie Gittens will come on the pitch.
