Chelsea’s midfield rebuild is accelerating, and it could open the door for one of the most explosive transfers of the summer.

Chelsea have reached an agreement on personal terms with Roma midfielder Manu Koné and are now driving to close a deal before the window shuts, according to multiple reports.

FootballTransfers report that Chelsea have settled the contract side with the 25-year-old and are now focused on striking a deal with Roma. French journalist Santi Aouna backed that up, confirming that direct talks between the clubs are underway, with negotiations “ongoing” over the midfielder’s future.

Italian reporter Nico Schira claims Chelsea have already tested Roma’s resolve with a €65m (£56m) offer. He also notes that coach Gian Piero Gasperini considers Koné “non-transferable”, leaving the final call with the player and owner Dan Friedkin.

That stance is being challenged. Gianluca Di Marzio has since described the move as an “advanced” deal, and suggested the fee could land closer to £52m rather than the higher figure reported elsewhere. Di Marzio also indicated that Jamie Bynoe-Gittens is close to joining Roma on loan, a move that would add another layer to the late-window manoeuvring between the clubs.

Roma do not want to sell. But the pressure is rising.

The Enzo domino

All of this points in one direction: Enzo Fernandez edging towards Manchester City.

Chelsea are prepared to let the Argentina international go, but only on their terms. Two conditions are clear. They want the full £120m fee and they want a replacement in the door first.

City are ready to pay that price, a deal that would shatter their transfer record and make Fernandez the most expensive midfielder in football history. The move would also stand as the biggest transfer of the summer in overall value, unless Julian Alvarez unexpectedly leaves for Arsenal.

Fernandez, for his part, is described as desperate to make the switch. His future, though, is now tangled up in how far Roma are willing to bend on Koné.

If Roma finally crack and accept Chelsea’s offer, Fernandez’s path to the Etihad suddenly looks wide open. If they hold the line, Chelsea’s entire midfield plan stalls.

One decision in Rome could reshape the middle of the pitch for both Stamford Bridge and Manchester City for years to come.
