Chelsea's Midfield Search: Bissouma and Wharton Updates
Chelsea’s search for a new midfield anchor has already sparked one of the more intriguing post-window stories.
According to reports, the club were offered former Tottenham midfielder Yves Bissouma as a potential replacement for Enzo Fernandez, who left Stamford Bridge for Manchester City in a £125m deal. Bissouma, 30, departed Spurs in the summer and was put forward as an option, but Chelsea chose not to move. The reshaping of their midfield, even after such a blockbuster exit, will clearly follow a different path.
City, though, are not done circling the market either.
Wharton interest rebuffed
Manchester City and Chelsea both showed interest in Crystal Palace midfielder Adam Wharton before the transfer deadline, with the 22-year-old quickly emerging as one of the most coveted young English midfielders around. Palace’s stance was simple: no deal. Every bid was rejected, and Wharton stayed put, a statement of intent from a club determined not to be stripped of its core talent on the final stretch of the window.
Baena on the radar, Atleti unmoved
Across Europe, Alex Baena’s name is rising fast. Aston Villa, Manchester City and Newcastle United are all tracking the 25-year-old Spain winger, who has caught the eye with his creativity and energy. Atletico Madrid, though, have shut the door for now and have no plans to sell, resisting early pressure from the Premier League’s big spenders.
Wolves resist for teenage forward
Wolves also faced a late test of resolve. Portugal Under-21 forward Mateus Mane attracted serious admiration before the window closed, with Liverpool and Manchester United both keen on the 18-year-old. A sale was possible, but Wolves ultimately kept hold of one of their most exciting young attacking prospects.
Arsenal line up Raphinha move
Attention is already drifting towards January. Arsenal are weighing up a £68m move for Barcelona winger Raphinha, 29, as they look to add another high-impact wide option to Mikel Arteta’s squad. The Brazil international has long been admired in England, and a winter bid would ignite one of the headline sagas of the next window.
Tottenham ready to cut ties with Richarlison?
Across north London, Tottenham are considering a far more drastic step. The club are weighing up paying off Richarlison’s contract to let the 29-year-old Brazil forward leave on a free transfer. It would be a brutal end to a move that never truly caught fire, and a clear sign of Spurs’ desire to reset their attacking options.
Everton’s late push for Castellanos
Everton, fighting to sharpen their frontline, made a late lunge on deadline day. The club lodged a verbal offer worth £40m plus £5m in add-ons for West Ham striker Taty Castellanos. The Hammers, though, received it too late to green-light the 27-year-old’s exit. The deal died with the clock, leaving Everton to ponder what might have been – and leaving Castellanos still in claret and blue, at least until the next window opens.
