Chelsea Reject Leeds' Mudryk Loan Bid but Talks Continue
Chelsea have turned down an opening proposal from Leeds United for winger Mykhailo Mudryk – but the door is very much still open.
Leeds’ first offer was for a season-long loan and landed well below Chelsea’s demands. It was rejected, yet negotiations are ongoing, with all sides aware the player wants clarity on his future before the new campaign settles.
Mudryk, 25, has already agreed in principle to spend the year away from Stamford Bridge to rebuild his match sharpness. His career stalled dramatically after a positive test for the banned substance meldonium led to a 20‑month absence from competitive football.
That suspension ended in July. Since then, the Ukraine international has been eased back in on Chelsea’s pre-season tour under new head coach Xabi Alonso, making a handful of appearances from the bench as the club carefully manage his return.
Premier League or bust?
Recent talks have made one thing clear: Mudryk’s priority is to stay in the Premier League. Strasbourg – Chelsea’s sister club under the BlueCo umbrella – have registered interest, as have sides in Italy, but England remains his preferred stage.
This is where Leeds have stolen a march. The Yorkshire club are prepared to take Mudryk on a straight loan with no option to buy, a key condition for Chelsea, who want to retain full control over a player they signed from Shakhtar Donetsk in 2023 for an initial £61m.
That stance has already cooled other suitors. Brentford, long-term admirers who tried to sign Mudryk months before Chelsea sealed that Shakhtar deal, had hoped to include an option to make the move permanent. Chelsea said no, and the Bees have been left on the fringes of the race, even if their interest has not disappeared entirely.
Leeds’ summer rebuild
Leeds are in the middle of a busy window as they reshape their squad and push to climb the Premier League table. Mudryk is viewed as a high-upside gamble, a winger with pace and one‑v‑one ability who, if he rediscovers his form, could transform their attack.
The Whites have already brought in four new faces: attacker Harry Wilson from Fulham, centre-back Tarik Muharemovic from Sassuolo, goalkeeper James Trafford from Manchester City and defender Nico Elvedi from Borussia Monchengladbach.
They previously looked at Chelsea striker Liam Delap, but that interest has cooled, with their focus now firmly on wide reinforcements.
Leeds are not alone in the queue. Coventry City have expressed an interest, while a move to Strasbourg remains firmly on Chelsea’s list of options. The French club could yet receive more than one player from Stamford Bridge, with midfielder Dario Essugo also being considered for a loan there as the ownership group looks to spread game time across its network.
What next for Mudryk?
For now, the likeliest outcome is a move away from Chelsea. The prospect of Mudryk staying put is regarded as slim, even if the club have not completely shut the door on that scenario should talks elsewhere collapse.
Leeds have made the first move and been rebuffed. The real question now is how far they are willing to go to land a winger who is desperate for a fresh start – and whether Chelsea, still guarding a £61m investment, are ready to trust Elland Road with one of their most intriguing reclamation projects.
