Chelsea on Alert as Top Clubs Target Josh Acheampong

Chelsea’s worst defensive start to a league campaign in years has arrived just as one of their brightest young defenders is attracting serious attention from across Europe.

Josh Acheampong, the highly regarded 20-year-old, is being monitored by several major clubs, with interest refusing to fade despite his limited game time at Stamford Bridge so far.

For a while, Chelsea’s stance has been clear: hands off.

Liverpool and Real Madrid have both tracked the England Under-21 international, only to be told he is effectively untouchable. Now, according to Spanish outlet AS, the list of admirers is growing, and the level of attention has sparked “alarm” inside the club.

Xabi Alonso, Chelsea’s manager, is understood to view Acheampong as central to his plans for this season, a player to build with rather than cash in on. That conviction is being tested.

The links are not going away. If anything, they are multiplying.

Bayern Munich are another heavyweight in the frame, having previously been named as a suitor by Christian Falk for CF Bayern Insider. For a 20-year-old still fighting for a regular starting place, the pull of that kind of interest is obvious.

And this is where Chelsea’s wider problems bite.

A 3-0 defeat to Brentford last night underlined the scale of their issues. Five games into the Premier League season, the Blues have conceded 12 goals – the worst defensive record in the division.

It is precisely the kind of environment that can make a young defender pause. Does he stay and ride out the turbulence in west London, trusting the project and Alonso’s faith? Or does he listen when Europe’s most stable and successful clubs come calling?

For now, Chelsea insist Acheampong is part of the solution, not a saleable asset.

But as the defeats stack up and the goals keep flying in, the question hanging over Stamford Bridge grows louder: how long can they keep one of their most coveted prospects convinced that this is the right place to grow?
