Chelsea 2026/27 Squad Numbers: Joao Pedro Takes No 9

Chelsea have locked in their squad numbers for the 2026/27 campaign, and behind the largely familiar list sit a few bold statements about where this team is heading under Xabi Alonso.

Joao Pedro takes on Chelsea’s No 9

The headline change belongs to Joao Pedro. The Brazil international has walked into one of the most scrutinised shirts at Stamford Bridge, trading his old 20 for the No 9. Liam Delap, who wore it last season, slides across to 12.

It is not just a cosmetic tweak. The No 9 at Chelsea carries a history, a burden, and an expectation. Pedro now wears all of it.

Defensive reshuffle on the board

At the back, Wesley Fofana’s status is underlined. He moves into the vacant No 3 shirt, freed up by Marc Cucurella’s move to Real Madrid. That shift opens the door for summer signing Pep Chavarria, who picks up 29.

Tosin Adarabioyo also steps into a fresh identity with 38 on his back. The No 4 he previously wore now belongs to another new arrival, Valentin Barco, a clear sign of the faith being placed in the Argentine.

Chelsea’s recruitment drive continues to echo through the numbers. Marco Palestra takes the No 2 shirt, while Maxence Lacroix inherits 5, previously worn by Benoit Badiashile. Those are traditional starter numbers, and they read like a direct message about the new defensive hierarchy.

Badiashile, along with Axel Disasi and Marc Guiu, finds himself on the outside for now. None of the three has been given a squad number after missing pre-season.

Midfield power plays

There is a quiet but telling rotation in midfield. Dario Essugo moves from 14 to 16, clearing the way for Jordan Henderson, who arrives and immediately claims 14. A veteran with a decorated career stepping into a classic midfield number: the symbolism is obvious.

Club-record signing Morgan Rogers gets 17, the shirt Andrey Santos vacated when he left for Manchester United. It is another sign of responsibility placed on new shoulders.

Academy rewarded after standout pre-season

The pre-season tour of Australia and Asia has left its mark. Reggie Watson (31), Mahdi Nicoll-Jazuli (32), and Tayo Subuloye (37) all receive squad numbers after impressing on the road.

There is no official confirmation yet that any of the three have been fully promoted to the first team. But numbers matter at this level. With Alonso known for trusting young talent, their inclusion hints at opportunities to come rather than token recognition.
