Championship Managers Set Early Benchmark for August Award
The Championship season is barely out of the blocks, but four head coaches have already planted a flag. Nathan Jones of Charlton Athletic, Swansea City’s Vitor Matos, Wolves manager Cesar Peixoto and QPR’s Julien Stephan have all been shortlisted for August’s Manager of the Month award.
Each arrives there by a different route. All of them have momentum.
Jones has made the loudest early statement. Charlton opened with three wins from three, a perfect start that sent them straight to the top of the table and underlined their intent. Three games, three victories, and an early view from the summit.
At Swansea, Matos has wasted no time putting his stamp on the side. Seven points from their first three fixtures, and still unbeaten, included eye-catching wins over Stoke City and Derby County. It’s the kind of opening that steadies a club and sharpens belief in a new era.
Peixoto, in his first season in charge of Wolves, has matched that return. Seven points from three as they chase an immediate return to the Premier League. The brief is clear, the pressure is heavy, yet the response across August has been controlled and convincing.
QPR’s story is one of quiet encouragement. Under Stephan, Rangers navigated the month without defeat, stringing together results that suggest a more stable campaign. Away wins at Portsmouth and Blackburn Rovers underlined their resilience on the road and added weight to the Frenchman’s nomination.
Only one of these four starts will be officially crowned. The first Championship Manager of the Month of the season will be announced on Friday, 11 September, and with it an early marker laid down in a long, unforgiving campaign.
