Champions League Returns: Key Matches and Predictions
The Champions League is back on a Wednesday night with a full blast of storylines: Liverpool against Atletico Madrid at Anfield, the holders PSG under pressure, Arsenal returning from heartbreak, and the new-look Camp Nou opening its doors to Europe again. The giants are back on the continent’s main stage, some flying, some limping, all under the spotlight.
FC Barcelona v Feyenoord: Flick’s free‑scorers return to Europe
European football returns to the revamped Camp Nou, and Barcelona arrive in frightening domestic form despite lacking a classic tier-one No. 9.
Hansi Flick’s side have ripped through the early weeks of La Liga, winning all four games and scoring five goals in three of them. Raphinha is already on six goals in four league outings, with Lamine Yamal and Fermin Lopez both sitting on four. This is a team that doesn’t just edge past low blocks; it tears them apart with movement and tempo.
The big absentee is Frenkie de Jong, the Dutchman missing for this opener, but Flick still has a loaded hand. New signings Rodri and Anthony Gordon deepen an attack that looks capable of overwhelming almost anyone in front of a home crowd eager for a European statement.
Feyenoord arrive unbeaten and confident. Luciano Valente and Gjivai Zechiel, both 22 and both pushing for Dutch national team recognition, headline a young, ambitious side that has started the season strongly. They will not come just to admire the surroundings.
But this is a brutal assignment. Away to a rampant Barcelona, at a reopened European fortress, against a squad stacked with pace, pressing and goals.
Prediction: FC Barcelona 4–1
Stuttgart v Viking: Debutants walk into a German test
Stuttgart’s season so far is a study in extremes. A 5–1 humiliation against Bayern Munich to open the Bundesliga, followed by a sharp 4–1 response against Koln on Friday. The volatility masks a simple truth: this is still a strong side.
Last season’s fourth-place finish in Germany underlined their rise, with 22-year-old Moroccan winger Bilal El Khannouss emerging as one of the standout talents. They will, however, be missing Luca Jaquez among others, trimming their options slightly for this European opener.
Viking step into the Champions League proper for the first time in their history. They arrive as champions of Norway, edging Bodo/Glimt by a single point in a tight title race, and they earned their place by knocking out Dinamo Zagreb in the playoff round. Norwegian football has been on a steady climb, and Viking are part of that wave.
The problem? They travel without Veton Berisha and at least two other first-choice starters. That’s a heavy handicap for a debut on this stage.
On paper, Stuttgart’s squad value, depth, and home advantage should tilt this heavily in the Germans’ favor. For Viking, this is both a reward and a reality check.
Prediction: Stuttgart 3–1
PSG v Slovan Bratislava: Holders searching for a spark
PSG return to the Champions League as defending champions but anything but serene. They edged Aston Villa 2–1 in the UEFA Super Cup, yet that has been their only high point in a stuttering start.
Since then, they’ve lost to Lens in the Trophee des Champions, drawn with Rennes and Lille, and then fallen to AS Monaco in Ligue 1. The early-season picture is clear: tired legs, patchy form, and a squad still trying to shake off a hangover from last year’s exertions.
Luis Enrique still commands an absurd level of talent. Ferran Torres arrived from Barcelona in the summer, joined by Ajax product Mika Godts and Maghnes Akliouche. The real cutting edge remains the trident of Desire Doue, Ousmane Dembele, and Khvicha Kvaratskhelia. Crucially, Kvaratskhelia is one of the few global stars who did not go to the World Cup, leaving him fresher than many of his peers heading into matchday one.
Behind them, players like Willian Pacho add more international pedigree to a lineup stacked with established names.
Slovan Bratislava, coached by Yaya Toure, come in as Slovak champions but in poor domestic form. They are a historic name at home, now tentatively stepping back into the European spotlight. Their squad is a patchwork of experience and graft, with veteran forwards Andraz Sporar and Tigran Barseghyan leading the line.
In Paris, that likely won’t be enough. The gap in quality is stark, and if PSG find any rhythm, the game should tilt heavily their way.
Prediction: PSG 4–0
Liverpool v Atletico Madrid: Two “second-tier” giants collide
Anfield under the lights. Atletico Madrid in town. Two clubs that believe they can go deep in this competition, yet both sit just below the absolute elite in most pre-season power rankings.
Liverpool begin their Champions League campaign under new boss Andoni Iraola. The Premier League start has been steady rather than spectacular: two draws followed by a win over Ipswich. Enough to settle nerves, not enough to intimidate Europe.
Iraola has selection problems. Federico Chiesa and Wataru Endo are unavailable for Europe, while Hugo Ekitike and Conor Bradley are out injured. Ronald Araujo, on loan from Barcelona, is set to anchor the defence at centre-back. On the right wing, Iraola must choose between big-money signing Bradley Barcola and fellow new arrival Victor Munoz from Osasuna. Barcola is the headline act, but Munoz offers reliability and familiarity with Iraola’s style.
Across the technical area, Atletico Madrid are juggling talent and turmoil. Julian Alvarez is a genuine star in La Liga and across Europe, but he pushed hard for a move to Barcelona that the club refused. The window is shut, he’s registered, but he is deeply unhappy under Diego Simeone and no longer the automatic starter he once was.
Atletico have rebuilt aggressively. Cristian Romero has arrived from Spurs to bolster the back line, Alejandro Grimaldo from Leverkusen adds quality on the left, Jonathan David joins on loan from Juventus, Kang-in Lee comes in from PSG, and Morten Hjulmand from Sporting CP strengthens midfield. It’s a refreshed squad that fully expects to be dangerous when the knockout rounds roll around.
Still, the weekend exposed cracks: three goals conceded in defeat to Athletic Bilbao, their first loss of the season, and a reminder that this new-look side is not yet airtight.
Anfield will demand a win, but Liverpool’s form doesn’t scream inevitability. Atletico, with Simeone’s instincts, may sit deep, spoil, and search for a point that would feel like a solid start.
Prediction: 1–1 draw
Sporting CP v Galatasaray: Youth against experience
This is one for the purists: two heavyweight clubs from outside Europe’s top five leagues, both used to winning, both desperate to prove they belong among the elite.
Sporting CP host Galatasaray in Lisbon with both sides in strong domestic form. Sporting have opened their Liga Portugal campaign with a 4–1–0 record, powered by Colombian international Luis Suarez and teenage talent Flavio Goncalves. The numbers underline the project: an average starting age of 24.8, a young side built to run and press.
Galatasaray bring the opposite profile. A veteran squad with an average age of 29.3, one of the oldest in Europe, but packed with know-how. They’ve started 3–1–0 in Turkey, and Victor Osimhen has already hit six goals.
That makes his absence here a huge blow. Injured, the Nigerian’s goals and presence are suddenly gone, and the attacking responsibility shifts heavily onto Brazilian attacking midfielder Gabriel Sara.
Sporting, at home, with energy and depth, should lean into their advantage. Galatasaray’s experience will keep them competitive, but without Osimhen, they are walking into a difficult night.
Prediction: Sporting CP 2–1
Napoli v Arsenal: Contenders tested in the south
Arsenal return to the Champions League with expectations at full volume. After losing the final to PSG last season, many pundits, including those at ESPN, now tip Mikel Arteta’s side to go one step further and lift the trophy.
The early signs have backed that up. Arsenal brushed aside Man City to win the Community Shield, then opened their Premier League campaign with three straight wins, including impressive victories over Aston Villa and Chelsea.
They travel to Naples without key defenders William Saliba and Jurrien Timber, a significant dent in their back line. New midfield signing Bruno Guimaraes is available and could start or come from the bench, while Christos Tzolis, signed from Brugge, has already stepped into a starting role on the wing.
Napoli, by contrast, stumble into this tie. Consecutive Serie A defeats to Como and Inter Milan, two of last season’s standout Italian sides, have darkened the mood. Home advantage at least offers a platform, but they remain underdogs.
Kevin De Bruyne, now 35 and a long-time Belgian international, may begin on the bench as his minutes are managed. Scott McTominay is still sidelined after heart surgery, removing another option from the midfield.
All signs point in one direction. Arsenal are in rhythm, confident, and armed with a deeper squad than a year ago. Napoli will fight, but holding back this wave for 90 minutes feels unlikely.
Prediction: Arsenal 3–1
The giants have their stage. Now we find out which of them are ready for the long haul to Wembley, and which are about to be exposed.
