Carrick's Commitment to Fernandes in Manchester United's Future

Michael Carrick is refusing to be drawn into contract politics, but his message about Bruno Fernandes could hardly be clearer: Manchester United’s captain remains central to everything he wants this team to be.

Fernandes, now 31, has entered the final year of his current deal. United hold an option to extend it by another 12 months, yet a £57m release clause hangs over the situation and has alerted Juventus, AC Milan and Galatasaray, who are weighing up whether to test United’s resolve.

Ideally, United would tie their skipper down to a new long-term agreement. So far, there has been no breakthrough. No new deal, no white smoke, just growing noise from Europe’s heavyweight recruiters.

Carrick, speaking in Maynooth on Thursday, chose not to wade into the contractual debate. He sidestepped the boardroom talk, but he did not hide how heavily he intends to lean on Fernandes this season.

“Listen, we want top players,” he said. “Every good team has players that have made a major impact. That’s how it is. Bruno has had that for a period of time here. We want to keep pushing and want to get the best out of Bruno and the team around him.”

That last line felt telling. This is not a manager preparing for life after his captain. This is a manager planning to build around him again.

Fernandes’ value to United has never been limited to goals and assists. Inside the dressing room, his influence runs deep. Staff talk about the way he drifts towards the younger players, how he breaks down moments on the pitch, how he offers advice without grandstanding.

Carrick has seen it up close since returning to the club.

“He’s been so positive since I came back,” the head coach said. “As much as the performances, it’s how he has been around the group, how he leads and takes time to help others, especially the younger players. That comes into play. He’s in a really good place and looking forward to the season.”

So while the release clause and the interest from Italy and Turkey will keep agents and executives busy, Carrick’s focus is simpler. He wants his captain driving standards, dictating games and dragging United through difficult moments.

The contract clock is ticking. The suitors are circling. For now, though, Bruno Fernandes remains the heartbeat of Carrick’s United – and the manager is determined to keep it that way.
