Calvin Ramsay Joins St Mirren on Loan to Rebuild Career

Calvin Ramsay wants to start again. St Mirren are offering him the stage.

The Scotland right-back has joined the Paisley club on a season-long loan from Liverpool, determined to “rebuild myself” after a stop-start spell in England that never caught fire.

Four years on from his £4.1m move from Aberdeen to Anfield, Ramsay has just four first-team appearances for Liverpool to his name. The rest of his senior football has been scattered across loans at Preston, Bolton, Wigan and Kilmarnock – 26 games that never quite added up to momentum.

Now 23, he knows he needs more than the odd outing. He needs a run.

“I know the league and I wanted to come back up here and try and show what I can do and rebuild myself again,” Ramsay said, laying out his mission in simple terms.

“I feel like it's a good place to come. I want to try and perform, work as hard as I can and see where that takes me.

“It's probably a different St Mirren compared to the last few years. That'll suit me. I'm comfortable on the ball, I'm composed, I like to get on it and try and create things and make things happen.”

St Mirren see the same thing. For manager Craig McLeish, this isn’t a charity case, it’s an opportunity.

He called Ramsay “exceptional” and believes the full-back will bring a “different dynamic” to his squad – a modern, on-the-ball defender in a team that has grown bolder in possession.

“It's a really important year for Calvin where he needs to find regular football to help kick on his career and we're happy to give him that platform because we get an exceptional young player to add to our group,” McLeish said.

Ramsay’s solitary Scotland cap came back in 2022. If this loan works, it doesn’t just relaunch a club career. It puts an international one back within reach.
