Brian Sorensen Joins Republic of Ireland Women’s Team for World Cup Play-Offs

Brian Sorensen is set to step back onto the international stage, with the former Everton manager poised to join the Republic of Ireland women’s set-up for their crucial World Cup play-off qualifiers later this year.

Sorensen is expected to be appointed assistant coach with the national side, working alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley as part of an expanded backroom team.

He will combine the role with his current position as technical director of Aston Villa Women, linking up with Ireland during international windows. That arrangement keeps him embedded in the Women’s Super League while giving Ireland the benefit of his club-level insight.

Sorensen will reunite with Republic of Ireland boss Carla Ward, who went up against his Everton side during her spell in charge of Villa in the WSL. Now, instead of standing in opposite dugouts, the pair will share the same technical area in a high-stakes international campaign.

Upcoming Matches

Ireland face Kazakhstan in the first round of Women’s World Cup play-off qualifying, a two-legged tie scheduled for 9 and 13 October. The margins will be tight. The games will be tense. And Sorensen’s arrival drops another experienced voice into an Irish camp chasing a place on the biggest stage of all.
