Brian Sorensen Joins Republic of Ireland Women’s Coaching Staff

Brian Sorensen is set for a swift return to the international stage, with the former Everton manager joining the Republic of Ireland women’s set-up for their World Cup play-off push.

The Dane is expected to be appointed assistant coach for the Republic’s Women’s World Cup play-off qualifiers later this year, working alongside Liverpool coach Amber Whiteley in a reshaped backroom team.

Crucially, Sorensen will continue in his role as technical director with Aston Villa Women. The arrangement will see him link up with Ireland only during international windows, adding his experience to a staff led by manager Carla Ward — a coach who knows him well from their battles in the Women’s Super League when Ward was in charge of Villa and Sorensen at Everton.

Play-off Qualifiers

Ireland face Kazakhstan in the first round of play-off qualifying, a two-legged tie that will be played on 9 and 13 October. Those dates now carry extra intrigue, with Ward able to call on a coach she once prepared to beat, now working at her side as Ireland chase a place on the biggest stage.
