Brian Farinas: From Girona Exit to Barcelona Renewal

Brian Farinas was almost out of the door. Now he’s suddenly part of the plan.

At the start of the summer, the 20-year-old midfielder looked set to leave FC Barcelona, with Girona pushing hard to take him to Estadi Montilivi. The operation was clear: a permanent move, around €1.5 million on the table for 50% of his economic rights, and a fresh start at a club rebuilding after relegation from La Liga.

That path has been ripped up.

De Jong’s injury flips the script

The turning point came far from Barcelona, during the 2026 FIFA World Cup. Frenkie de Jong’s injury, and the confirmation that the Netherlands midfielder would be out for a lengthy spell, forced the club to reassess its midfield plans.

Hansi Flick didn’t hesitate. Instead of green-lighting Farinas’ departure, the new Barça coach pulled him closer. He wanted to see him up close in pre-season, to test him, to stress him, before making any definitive call.

The response from Farinas has been exactly what any young La Masia product dreams of. Given regular minutes across the summer, the former Villarreal youth player has impressed the German. Energy, personality, end product. Enough to change a transfer strategy that had seemed almost settled.

From Girona exit to Barça renewal

Journalist Matteo Moretto now reports that Farinas will stay at Barcelona this summer. Not just stay, but stay with a new contract on the way. The club and the player’s camp are already working on his renewal, locking in a future that only weeks ago looked like it would be played in Girona colours.

Farinas is not a passing name in the academy system. He has been at La Masia since 2018, eight years of education in the Barça way, and last season he captained Barça Atletic at times. Across 33 appearances for the reserve side, he produced five goals and seven assists – numbers that underline why the club hesitated before letting him walk for a modest fee.

The internal reshuffle has a casualty. With Farinas now retained, Barcelona have chosen to move on from Tommy Marques, the youngster who made his first-team debut last season. While Farinas’ stock rises, Marques is the one heading for the exit.

A different kind of opportunity

Farinas’ current deal runs until 2028, but the renewal talks signal something more important than dates and clauses: trust. Trust that he can be more than a reserve-team leader, that he can help absorb the shock of De Jong’s absence and fight for minutes in a midfield suddenly short on experience.

A few weeks ago, his future seemed to lie in a promotion chase with Girona. Now, it lies in convincing Hansi Flick he belongs at the Camp Nou.
