Brian Farinas: From Girona Transfer to Barcelona's No. 4 Shirt

Brian Farinas needed one training session. That was all.

The 20-year-old La Masia midfielder arrived at Barcelona’s pre-season with a suitcase half-packed for Girona and walked out of it wearing the No. 4 shirt in the first team. The number left vacant by Ronald Araujo now belongs to a player who, a few weeks ago, seemed destined to leave for €3 million.

From exit door to No. 4

On 13 July, as the squad reported for medical tests, Farinas was just another academy name on the list. Barcelona and Girona were already close to an agreement for his transfer. Inside the club, the expectation was simple: he would pass through, not stay.

Then came the first training session under Hansi Flick.

According to Luis F Rojo of MARCA, that single session changed everything. Flick watched Farinas closely, liked what he saw, and moved fast. Very fast. The German coach went straight to Deco and asked him to stop the negotiations with Girona. No more talks, no more calls. He wanted time. Time to see more of this midfielder in England during the team’s training camp before allowing him to leave.

The camp only reinforced that first impression.

Flick’s surprise weapon

Farinas did not just earn a stay of execution. He forced a rethink.

His performances in training convinced Flick to go beyond keeping him around. The Girona move was shelved, and the coach pushed for him to be fully integrated into the senior squad. On Tuesday, the final day of the transfer window, Barcelona registered Farinas with the first team and handed him the No. 4 shirt.

With that, he picked up a rare distinction: he is the first player in 19 years to be officially registered as a Barcelona first-team player without having made his senior debut.

Flick’s admiration is not built on one trick. He values Farinas’ attitude and his willingness to do whatever the team needs. The 20-year-old’s natural role is as a defensive midfielder, but he can also operate as an interior and even fill in at full-back. For a coach who prizes flexibility and intensity, that kind of profile is gold.
