Brentford Set to Sign El Hadji Malick Diouf for £40m
Brentford have struck a verbal agreement with West Ham to sign El Hadji Malick Diouf in a deal that could rise to £40m, as Thomas Frank’s side make a major move to reinforce their defence.
The 21-year-old Senegal international left-back will cost an initial £35m, with a further £5m in performance-related add-ons. West Ham have accepted Brentford’s offer and Diouf has been given the green light to undergo a medical.
It marks a rapid escalation in a pursuit that had threatened to drift. Diouf has been Brentford’s top defensive target throughout this window, but talks stalled earlier in the summer before being revived this week and pushed quickly towards agreement.
His imminent departure comes after a curious start to the season with West Ham. Diouf started the Hammers’ Championship opener against Burnley, then disappeared from the last two matchday squads as negotiations intensified in the background.
For West Ham, the sale represents a sharp piece of business on the balance sheet. They signed Diouf from Slavia Prague for £19m just a year ago; now they stand to more than double their money after a single campaign in claret and blue.
On the pitch, he was a regular presence last season despite the club’s struggles, making 34 appearances and providing five assists from left-back. Those numbers, alongside his athletic profile and delivery from wide areas, turned heads across the division and pushed him firmly onto Brentford’s radar.
Diouf would be returning to the Premier League after suffering relegation with West Ham, who finished 18th last term. The contrast with Brentford could hardly be sharper. Under Keith Andrews, the Bees surged to ninth place and missed out on European football only on goal difference.
That upward curve has been matched by Diouf’s rise on the international stage. After breaking into the Senegal squad last year, he featured four times at the World Cup this summer, underlining his status as one of Africa’s most promising young full-backs.
If the move is completed, Diouf will become Brentford’s fifth signing of the summer window. He follows striker Callum Wilson, midfielder Mamadou Sangare, centre-back Jannik Schuster and winger Jaidon Anthony into a squad being quietly, and expensively, upgraded.
Brentford opened their new campaign in style with a 3-0 dismantling of Tottenham Hotspur on Saturday. Leeds await on Sunday. By then, they could be a medical and a signature away from adding a World Cup-tested, £40m left-back to a team already threatening to crash the Premier League’s established order.
