Breel Embolo will finally join up with Switzerland’s World Cup squad in the United States after days of uncertainty over his right to travel were brought to an end on Thursday.

The Swiss football federation confirmed that the 29-year-old striker has been granted a visa and is expected to land in San Diego on Friday evening, reuniting with team-mates who flew out without him earlier in the week.

From airport no-show to late arrival

While the rest of Murat Yakin’s squad departed for their pre-tournament base in California on Tuesday, Embolo stayed behind in Switzerland, grounded by a late hitch in his ESTA travel authorisation. The routine approval was suddenly placed under further review shortly before departure, forcing the forward to watch the team leave without him.

It was an awkward image for a side that counts him among its most important attacking options: the squad heading west, one of its key strikers stuck at home, waiting on paperwork.

The wait is now over.

“We have just been informed that Breel Embolo’s visa has been approved. He will therefore be able to travel to the United States. He is expected to join the team on Friday evening,” the federation said in a statement.

Extra checks and old cases

The delay was triggered by additional checks requested by American authorities. Embolo had to attend an appointment at the U.S. Embassy in Bern on Wednesday, where officials went through documents linked to a legal case stemming from a 2018 altercation in Basel.

U.S. authorities also asked for court records tied to a separate matter: a 2023 conviction for making multiple threats. That case resulted in a suspended fine and became legally binding earlier this year, according to the Swiss federation.

Both issues had already run their course through the Swiss legal system. Yet they still prompted closer scrutiny under U.S. entry rules before the visa was finally granted.

Relief for Switzerland

For Switzerland, the decision removes an unwelcome distraction just as final World Cup preparations intensify. Embolo’s presence changes the complexion of their attack; his absence would have forced a late tactical rethink.

Instead, he will step off a long-haul flight into the thick of it, with little time to spare. The paperwork drama is over. Now the focus turns to whether he can turn delayed departure into decisive impact on the biggest stage.
