Beşiktaş Dominates Marseille in Europa League Opener

Beşiktaş opened their UEFA Europa League season with a statement. Under the lights in Istanbul, they tore through Marseille 4-1, turning an even first half into a ruthless second‑half showcase.

The hosts needed only 15 minutes to ignite the night. Ilhan Fakili burst into life, exchanging passes with Olaitan before slipping in behind the French side’s back line. One touch to steady himself, one precise strike into the corner. Beşiktaş were in front and the stadium felt it.

Marseille refused to fold. On the half-hour, Abdalla dragged them level with a move that sliced straight through the home defence. Abdelli launched a long pass to the right, Abdalla surged into the box and drilled a low shot across goal into the far corner. One chance, one clinical answer. 1-1, and suddenly the tie looked wide open.

Just before the interval, Beşiktaş should have gone back in front. Orkun Kökçü broke clear and faced De Lange one-on-one, only for the Marseille goalkeeper to stand tall and win the duel. That save sent the sides into the break level, with the sense that the next goal would shape everything.

Second Half

The second half made that feeling look prophetic.

Beşiktaş came out sharper, faster, angrier. The pressure finally told in the 56th minute. Kökçü slipped a pass to Černý, who pulled his shot across goal towards the far corner. It kissed the post on its way in, the kind of finish that drains belief from a defence. The hosts led again, and this time they did not look interested in letting Marseille back.

Three minutes later, the game tilted decisively. From a Kökçü corner, defender Murillo rose highest and powered a header past De Lange. In the space of 180 seconds, Beşiktaş had turned a tight contest into a two-goal cushion, with Kökçü orchestrating both strikes.

Marseille were rocking. Fakili almost punished them again in the 68th minute, shaping a curling effort that beat De Lange but not the woodwork, crashing against the crossbar as the crowd groaned and then roared.

The fourth goal felt inevitable. It arrived in the 81st minute and underlined the gulf by the end. Poku finished off a flowing move, Olaitan providing the assist after linking neatly with Vlahovic. One touch, then another, and Marseille were carved open once more. Poku did the rest to seal a 4-1 scoreline that reflected Beşiktaş’s dominance after the break.

Three points, four goals, and a home crowd sent away buzzing. As opening nights go, Beşiktaş could hardly have scripted a more emphatic start to their Europa League journey.
