Ben White Ruled Out for Season – Major Blow to Arsenal's Double Bid

Arsenal’s push for a historic Premier League and Champions League double has taken a brutal hit. Ben White will not kick another ball this season.

The defender, who has quietly become one of Mikel Arteta’s most reliable lieutenants, has suffered a significant medial knee ligament injury and will miss Arsenal’s final two league fixtures and the Champions League final against Paris St Germain on May 30.

He left the London Stadium on Sunday with a brace strapped to his right knee, having been forced off in the first half of Arsenal’s tense 1-0 win over West Ham. The sight alone told its own story. Arteta admitted straight after the game that it “didn’t look good at all”. The scans have now confirmed the manager’s worst fears.

Season over – and World Cup dream shattered

For White, the timing could hardly be crueller. At 28, he had just fought his way back into the England fold, ending a four-year international exile with appearances in recent games against Uruguay and Japan. This injury almost certainly ends his hopes of making the World Cup squad.

Arsenal’s statement pulled no punches.

“Further to Sunday’s match at West Ham, subsequent assessments and specialist reviews have confirmed that Ben White has sustained a significant medial knee ligament injury, which will rule him out for the remainder of this season.

“Our medical team are now managing Ben’s recovery and rehabilitation programme, with everyone fully focused on supporting the aim of Ben being ready for the start of our pre-season preparations.”

So that is the new target: not Burnley, not Crystal Palace, not PSG. Pre-season.

Arteta’s right-back puzzle

On the pitch, the implications are immediate and severe. White has been central to Arsenal’s structure, shuttling between orthodox right-back and an auxiliary centre-back, often stepping inside to help build play. Now Arteta must rip up that part of the plan on the eve of the run-in.

Jurrien Timber, the obvious replacement, is also sidelined. He has been out for two months with a groin problem and there is still no clarity on whether he will feature again before the season closes. That leaves Arsenal short in a position that has underpinned so much of their control and balance.

Cristhian Mosquera is expected to step in, a talented deputy but untested in games of this magnitude. Declan Rice has already been used as an emergency right-back this season and could again be asked to plug gaps if the situation becomes desperate.

The schedule offers no breathing space. Burnley and Crystal Palace in the league, then PSG on the biggest stage of all. Three games that will define Arsenal’s season, maybe their era under Arteta, and they must face them without one of their most dependable figures.

White will watch it all from the sidelines, knee in rehab, World Cup hopes on hold, as Arsenal try to finish a monumental season with one defender short and no margin for error.
