Bayern Munich Denies Shock Move for Florian Wirtz
Bayern Munich have cooled talk of a dramatic Florian Wirtz return – for now – but the story around the Liverpool playmaker is far from closed.
The German champions have been repeatedly linked with a move for the 21-year-old after his stuttering start to life at Anfield, yet well-placed journalist Christian Falk insists there is no active pursuit from Munich at this stage.
Bayern shut down ‘shock move’ talk
Liverpool beat both Bayern Munich and Manchester City to Wirtz in the summer of 2025, paying around £116m to prise him from Bayer Leverkusen. It was a statement signing: one of Europe’s most inventive young attackers, a player tipped to shape a new era on Merseyside.
Reality has been harsher.
Wirtz has struggled to impose himself in the Premier League, his adaptation hampered by the league’s intensity and physical edge. That dip, set against his price tag, has inevitably triggered speculation that Bayern might swoop back in if Liverpool’s patience wears thin.
Falk, speaking on CF Bayern Insider, pushed back hard on that narrative.
“It is NOT TRUE: Bayern Munich are tracking Florian Wirtz and could make a shock move for the Liverpool player. My information is that this is not true,” he said.
The links are not plucked from thin air. Bayern and Wirtz share a history: two secret meetings before his Liverpool move, one in Munich and another on Merseyside, where Arne Slot ultimately convinced the Germany international to choose Liverpool.
That background ensures the rumour mill never really stops, especially when questions surface over Wirtz’s form in England. Falk, though, is not buying the idea that the player is collapsing under the weight of expectation.
“To be clear, I don’t necessarily share those concerns; I think Wirtz is performing better than he did last year. He has a new position in the team,” he argued, before pointing to another subplot in Munich – Jamal Musiala’s own issues following illness and last season’s injuries.
Swap whispers: Wirtz and Olise enter the same frame
The denial from Bayern does not wipe the board clean. It just shifts the angle.
Falk stressed there is “nothing planned” between Bayern and Wirtz, yet he stopped short of dismissing a future scenario in which Michael Olise and Wirtz become part of the same transfer equation.
Reports have floated the idea of a swap deal involving Liverpool and Bayern, or Olise being sold to fund a move for Wirtz. It is speculative, but not entirely fanciful.
“So, you can see where some reports have taken these conditions and claimed that one plus one equals two,” Falk explained. “Of course, if Florian Wirtz were, at some point in future, interested in making a return to the Bundesliga, Bayern Munich would be the first team he’d talk to. However, there is nothing planned.”
Right now, Bayern feel strong. Vincent Kompany is bedding in a new system with Olise as the central fulcrum, mirroring the role he occupies for France. Musiala is tied to a long contract. The squad is deep, the options rich.
And there is the financial reality: Liverpool’s outlay on Wirtz was huge. Any club thinking of testing their resolve would have to come armed with serious money or a very creative structure.
That is where Olise re-enters the picture.
“Everyone is hoping the former Crystal Palace star signs a new contract, but if not, and he decides for a transfer, of course Florian Wirtz would be a player who’s interesting for Bayern Munich,” Falk said.
“The German can play on the side or centrally. This would be a very interesting thing, and if you make a swap deal with Liverpool or sell Olise for a lot of money to Real Madrid, you have the money to make an offer for Wirtz.
“So, there are many, many positions which have to be discussed. I wouldn’t say it’s not true that Bayern Munich would have thought of that.”
For now, Wirtz remains Liverpool’s expensive project and Bayern’s long-term what-if. But if his form continues to fluctuate and Olise’s contract situation drags on, the quiet calculations in Munich and on Merseyside will only grow louder.
