Barcelona's Urgent Pursuit of Rodri: High-Stakes Negotiations with Manchester City
Barcelona have drawn a hard line in the sand. According to Fichajes, the Catalan club have given themselves just 48 hours to close a deal for Manchester City midfielder Rodri, aiming to unveil him in time for the Joan Gamper Trophy.
This is now a high‑stakes endgame between two European giants. Talks have accelerated, but the gap in valuation still hangs over the table. City are standing firm: they want a package close to €80 million (£69m) before even thinking about letting their midfield anchor walk.
Barcelona have already tested that resolve. Their official offer of €60m plus €10m in add-ons was rejected. A reworked proposal that could have climbed to €75m also failed to move City, forcing both sides into more intricate negotiations over the weekend.
The money isn’t the only issue. How that money is paid is the real battlefield. City want as much of the fee guaranteed as possible. Barcelona, operating under strict financial constraints, are trying to keep the fixed outlay down and lean more on variables.
Two compromise structures are now on the table. One would see €70m paid in fixed instalments with a smaller add-on package. The other drops the guaranteed amount to €65m but bolsters performance-related bonuses up to €15m. Both reach City’s overall valuation. The argument is over where the risk lies.
Amid all this, Rodri’s stance is crystal clear. The Spain international has told City he wants to leave England and has made Barcelona his priority. Any potential move to Real Madrid has been completely ruled out, a development that has only strengthened Barça’s confidence as they push to get this over the line.
Rodri has already reported back for pre-season with City after requesting a brief delay to sort out his future. He is training, building fitness, doing everything expected of him. Yet everyone involved knows his time in Manchester could now be running out quickly.
From Barcelona’s side, there is a sense of both urgency and reluctance. They view City’s asking price as high, especially for a player entering the final year of his contract. But they also recognise the reality: if they want Rodri now, they will have to pay close to City’s terms.
