Barcelona Targets Harry Kane as Lewandowski Replacement
Barcelona have identified Harry Kane as the man to rebuild their forward line around – and they are prepared to wait for him.
According to the Daily Mail, the Catalan club have made their interest clear to the 32-year-old and agreed to revisit the situation once England’s 2026 World Cup campaign is over. With Robert Lewandowski heading to MLS side Chicago Fire, Barça are suddenly without a true reference point in attack. Inside the club, Kane is viewed as the ultimate marquee replacement.
That ambition collides with reality. Barcelona’s financial problems are no secret, yet the hierarchy is exploring creative ways to fund a move for a striker who has only one year left on his Bayern Munich contract. Bayern, though, are desperate to keep their talisman. Kane has become the face of their project, and the pull of Camp Nou will test just how deeply he is tied to the Bavarian plan.
For now, the early signs are not encouraging for Barça.
Initial feedback from the player’s camp points to a deal that will be extremely hard to pull off. The report claims Kane’s representatives effectively shut down the conversation after a phone call from Barcelona, with the England captain said to be enjoying life in Germany. That has not scared off the Spanish giants. If even the slightest opening appears once the World Cup ends in North America, they are ready to “go all out”.
Kane’s form explains why.
Since landing in Munich, he has been nothing short of devastating. He has already become England’s all-time leading scorer in World Cup history, a landmark that only strengthens his status as a modern great. Bayern would demand a huge fee to even sit at the table, despite his age and the ticking clock on his contract. An “astronomical” figure is expected, not just for his goals, but for what he represents.
The timing of Barcelona’s move could hardly be more delicate. Kane is locked in on two fronts: driving Thomas Tuchel’s Bayern through the knockout rounds at club level and leading England on the biggest stage. He struck three times in the group phase and arrives in the last 32 on the back of a staggering season in Munich – 61 goals in 51 games. Any serious conversation about his club future is on hold until England’s World Cup story is written.
England now prepare to face DR Congo in the last 32 in Atlanta, and Kane’s focus is fixed firmly on the tournament. Speaking to BBC Sport about his latest milestone, he said: “The World Cup is the biggest competition we play as professional footballers, so to get to 11 goals is a proud feeling. I just want to enjoy this moment with the team. I never take these moments for granted. Another good milestone to hit, and I hope it is not the last one in this tournament.”
If Barcelona do somehow push the deal over the line, it would mark the second time Kane has stepped directly into Lewandowski’s shoes, having already followed the Pole at Bayern. Within the corridors of power at Camp Nou, there is a firm belief that the England captain is the only forward who can guarantee Lewandowski-level numbers, a cornerstone for Hansi Flick’s tactical blueprint.
They also know prising him away from Munich will be brutal.
With that in mind, Barça are working on parallel tracks. Kane is the dream, but they are keeping other options warm in case the negotiations become unworkable. One of those alternatives is Atletico Madrid striker Julian Alvarez, who has been heavily linked with a move and has fuelled speculation with recent comments about wanting to leave Atletico. Optimism at Camp Nou has grown around that possibility.
Whether Barcelona end up pushing their chips in for Kane or pivoting hard towards Alvarez, one thing is unavoidable: this summer will demand a massive financial gamble.
