Barcelona's Silence on Messi Tribute: No Farewell Planned

Barcelona are not working on a tribute or farewell match for Lionel Messi, despite the greatest player in the club’s history approaching the twilight of his career.

Information relayed to Barça Universal by journalist Adrian Sanchez makes it clear: there is currently no plan inside the club to stage an official homage to the Argentine.

That silence says a lot.

A Relationship Still Scarred

The bond between Messi and Barcelona’s board has never fully recovered from the trauma of 2021. His place in the club’s history is untouchable, but the way it ended left scars that still shape decisions today.

Messi did not leave because Barça no longer wanted him. It was not a football call. The club, crushed by financial chaos and La Liga’s strict salary rules, could not renew his contract. Joan Laporta had campaigned on keeping him at Camp Nou. In the end, Barcelona pulled the offer.

Messi left in tears and in shock, heading to Paris Saint-Germain. The club lost its icon. The player lost his home.

The fallout went beyond paperwork and press conferences. Laporta later admitted their relationship was “not what it used to be”. At one Ballon d’Or gala, he recalled an awkward moment when Messi felt they should not even greet each other. For two men once united at the heart of an era, that image is striking.

No wonder a farewell has never been straightforward.

From Talk of Statues to a Standstill

Earlier this year, whispers grew louder. A tribute match. A grand farewell. The idea of Messi returning, if only for one night, to receive the ovation many felt he was denied.

Laporta did nothing to kill that dream. He even said publicly that “Leo deserves a statue at Camp Nou”, a line that instantly fired imaginations among supporters.

But words have not turned into action. The latest indications point in the opposite direction: there is no concrete plan, no scheduled date, no working group inside the club pushing an official Messi tribute.

Laporta still calls him a Barcelona legend. He has spoken of his hope that their relationship can be repaired over time. He has also floated the idea that a proper public homage could arrive once the Camp Nou renovation is complete.

For now, that remains hypothetical. The stadium is being rebuilt. The club is trying to rebuild its finances. The emotional rebuild with Messi lags behind.

Barcelona insist they recognise what he gave them. The question is whether they will ever find the right moment, and the right courage, to say goodbye properly.
