Barcelona sells Jofre Torrents to Ajax for €6 million
Barcelona have agreed to sell young full-back Jofre Torrents to Ajax in a deal worth around €6 million, including fixed fees and variables, with the Catalan club retaining 50% of his rights.
The 19-year-old is expected in Amsterdam within hours to undergo a medical and sign a four-year contract with the Dutch giants, sealing his first move away from Spain.
La Masia product heads for Ajax
The agreement between Barcelona and Ajax was closed on Thursday night, when the final transfer documents were signed, bringing a swift end to negotiations.
Torrents, who joined La Masia in 2017 at the age of ten, leaves after climbing through the academy and making four official first-team appearances last season. He also featured in pre-season this summer, playing in friendlies against CE Europa and Birmingham City.
His Barcelona chapter is effectively over. Only the logistics remain.
The defender is currently waiting for formal authorisation from Barcelona to travel. If the green light arrives in time, he will fly to Amsterdam immediately, complete his medical and sign his contract without delay.
If not, the plan shifts slightly. Torrents would travel on Sunday, watch his new teammates from the stands, and then undergo his medical on Monday.
Ajax host Heerenveen at 16:45 on Sunday in the second round of the Eredivisie, a first glimpse of the environment he is about to step into.
Fierce competition and a new life
For Torrents, this is a leap into the unknown and a serious test. Ajax is unforgiving with its standards, especially for defenders expected to play with personality and ambition.
He will battle for minutes with Caio Henrique, the Brazilian left-back signed this summer for €10 million, in a position where Ajax demand both defensive solidity and attacking thrust.
A move of this size, at this age, marks a clear bet from Ajax. For Barcelona, it is both a sporting and financial play: cash in now, but keep 50% of any future upside.
Deco’s clear-out gathers pace
Torrents’ departure fits neatly into Deco’s broader plan to slim down the squad before the transfer window closes. The sporting director has made it clear: the group is too big, and exits are needed.
