Barcelona's Renewed Interest in Julian Alvarez

Barcelona’s pursuit of Julian Alvarez, which seemed dead by the end of the summer window, may not be buried after all. The door that Atletico Madrid tried to slam shut could creak open again in January.

According to El Chiringuito TV, people close to Alvarez believe the forward’s situation at Atletico might deteriorate as the season unfolds, to the point where the club are forced to rethink their hardline stance on the Argentina international. In that scenario, they even see a possibility that Atletico, not Barcelona, could be the ones initiating contact.

A saga that refuses to fade

All summer, Alvarez sat at the top of Barcelona’s list to fill the No.9 role. He was the preferred option, the profile the sporting department had agreed on. Yet Barça never managed to pull him out of the Metropolitano, running into a brick wall of resistance from Atletico.

So they pivoted. Gabriel Jesus arrived as the alternative, a big-name signing meant to close the gap in attack and, in theory, close the Alvarez chapter.

It hasn’t.

Inside Barcelona, the admiration for Alvarez has not cooled. The club still see him as an ideal long-term solution up front, and the failed push in the last window has not changed that internal assessment. Jesus might be in the squad now, but the idea of adding Alvarez has quietly remained on the table.

The numbers help keep that idea alive. Barcelona are believed to have around €60 million of Financial Fair Play margin available, enough room to seriously explore another major transfer if the right opportunity appears in January.

Atletico’s hard line under pressure

Atletico’s message all summer was blunt: Alvarez is not leaving. The club treated the matter as closed business long before the market shut, confident the noise around Barcelona’s interest would eventually die down.

It hasn’t done that either.

The speculation still hangs over Alvarez, shadowing his season before it has truly settled. Atletico know it. Inside the Metropolitano, there is an acceptance that talk of Barcelona will continue to swirl, whether the forward stays or not.

For now, their official stance has not shifted. They refused to negotiate in the summer and have given no public sign of softening. But the belief from Alvarez’s camp that the situation could become “untenable” changes the tone of the story. If the relationship between player and club strains under the weight of expectation, minutes, or role, the dynamic in any negotiation changes with it.

That is where Barcelona sense a potential opening.

January’s possible turning point

If Atletico’s position weakens under internal pressure and the player’s camp pushes for a solution, Barcelona might find themselves in a far stronger bargaining seat.

But in a market where elite No.9s are scarce and expensive, Barcelona know chances like this rarely come twice. If Atletico’s grip on Alvarez loosens even slightly before January, the Catalan club will be ready to test just how “untenable” things in Madrid have really become.
