Barcelona's Push for Adeyemi Amid Dortmund Standoff
Karim Adeyemi is back on Barcelona’s radar – and this time, the numbers might finally add up.
The Borussia Dortmund forward has been a long-term target for Jorge Mendes, who has spent more than one summer trying to steer the German international towards Camp Nou. Each time, Barcelona’s salary cap constraints slammed the door shut before talks could truly heat up.
Now the landscape has changed.
Barça return to the table
Operating under La Liga’s 1:1 financial rule, Barcelona believe they can move decisively for what they view as a market opening: a 22-year-old winger with Champions League pedigree, a year left on his contract, and a club under pressure to sell.
The Catalan side have already made their first move. According to Sky Germany, relayed by SPORT, Barça have submitted an opening offer to Dortmund: €20 million up front, plus a sizeable sell-on percentage for any future transfer.
It is not the blockbuster fee that once would have been required for a player of Adeyemi’s profile. It is a calculated bid, built on leverage rather than emotion.
No agreement is in place yet, but both sides are now locked in formal negotiations.
Barcelona see Adeyemi not as a marquee replacement, but as the experienced wide option to sit alongside – and not block – the development of Roony Bardghji, their younger attacking project. The idea is to deepen the attacking rotation, not rip it up.
A gap in valuation
The problem is simple: Dortmund still want double.
As the window has worn on, the Bundesliga club have gradually eased their demands, yet they continue to value Adeyemi at around €40 million. Barcelona consider that figure out of step with the current context.
Dortmund’s hand is not as strong as it once was. Adeyemi has just one year left on his deal. He was not an automatic starter last season. His form across the last two campaigns has veered between explosive and frustrating.
All of that chips away at the asking price.
What really tightens the screw is the player’s stance. Adeyemi has already reached an agreement with Barcelona on personal terms, increasing the pressure on Dortmund to find a solution rather than risk losing him for significantly less – or even for free – down the line.
The German club are holding their line publicly, but the clock is ticking.
Player swaps on the table
With a sizeable gap between the two valuations, the discussion is shifting towards creative structures rather than pure cash.
One option: player exchanges.
Dortmund have been tracking Roony Bardghji, who has yet to secure a move away and is eager for regular minutes at a club that competes deep into European competitions. The Bundesliga side is seen as an ideal platform – competitive, high-intensity, and historically willing to trust young attacking talent.
Including Bardghji in the talks could help drag the fee down, though Barcelona must balance his long-term potential against the immediate boost Adeyemi would provide.
Another name in Dortmund’s sights is Guille Fernández, the attacking midfielder from Barça Atletic, also under the Mendes umbrella. Dortmund asked about him in January, but the clubs could not find common ground at the time.
Now his name is back in the conversation as both sides look for a formula that works: cash plus a prospect, sell-on clauses, or a more complex package that protects each club’s interests.
For Barcelona, this is a test of their new financial discipline and their ability to exploit a rare moment of leverage in the market. For Dortmund, it is a question of how far they are willing to bend before Adeyemi walks away for far less than the €40 million they still cling to.
Somewhere between those numbers lies the deal. The only question is which side blinks first.
