Barcelona's Left-Footed Centre-Back Search Takes New Turn
Barcelona’s search for a new left-footed centre-back has taken another sharp turn, and this time it comes with two very clear “no” answers.
Transfer specialist Matteo Moretto has definitively ruled out both Castello Lukeba and Goncalo Inacio as options, even though both had seemed to fit the profile and the rumour mill had already started to warm up around their names.
A very specific profile for Hansi Flick
Inside the club, the brief is simple but strict: a left-footed central defender, someone who can strengthen the back line and give Hansi Flick a natural option on that side. That type of profile has been marked as a priority as Barcelona reshape the squad under the German coach.
Reports in recent days suggested the operation was being handled with maximum discretion. Moretto then added intrigue, revealing that the defender Barcelona are working on does not play in Spain and is not a name casual followers would instantly recognise.
Naturally, attention swung towards Castello Lukeba.
The RB Leipzig defender has been on Barcelona’s radar, and Flick is known to rate the Frenchman’s ability to operate both as a centre-back and as a left-back. On paper, he ticked almost every box.
But the door has now been shut.
Lukeba ruled out “100%”
Despite the links and his obvious qualities, Lukeba is not the man Barcelona are trying to bring in.
Moretto has been emphatic, ruling out the Leipzig defender’s profile “100%” and effectively killing off speculation that the 23-year-old is the mystery signing the club are preparing.
It is not a question of talent. Lukeba’s versatility would have given Flick cover across the defensive line, and his comfort on the left side matches exactly the area the club want to reinforce. He looks like the obvious solution.
Barcelona, though, are clearly not shopping in the obvious aisle.
The search is pointing elsewhere, away from the names already circulating loudly in the market. The message from the sporting department is that they are pursuing a different, lower-profile option, one who has not yet been pushed into the spotlight.
Goncalo Inacio also off the table
The same verdict has now been delivered on Goncalo Inacio.
The Sporting CP defender has long been associated with Barcelona’s need for a left-footed centre-back, his name regularly appearing alongside any discussion of that role. But Moretto’s latest information places him firmly outside the club’s current plans.
The key detail is recognition.
According to the journalist, the player Barcelona are actively working on is less well known than both Lukeba and Inacio. That lack of fame fits with the near-total silence around the identity of the target so far and explains why no clear favourite has emerged in public.
Barcelona seem determined to keep this move buried under the surface until the moment a deal is ready.
The market is full of big, familiar names. The club, by choice, are chasing one that most fans might need to google on the day he signs.
