Barcelona's Search for Defensive Reinforcements: Inacio Ruled Out

Barcelona’s search for defensive reinforcements has taken a clear turn – and it does not lead to Lisbon.

Ronald Araujo’s loan move to Liverpool opened a sizeable hole at the heart of Barça’s back line. The captain’s departure, after two difficult seasons in Catalonia, created both a tactical and symbolic vacancy. Someone would have to step in.

Inside the club, there is genuine belief that academy centre-back Alvaro Cortes could grow into that role. But Barcelona have also kept one eye on the market, scanning for an opportunity that fits both their footballing idea and their financial reality.

Gonçalo Inacio’s name inevitably surfaced.

The Sporting CP defender, a left-footed 24-year-old with strong pedigree in Portugal, has been heavily linked in recent days. On paper, he ticks plenty of boxes: comfortable on the ball, used to building from the back, experienced in European competition.

Yet Barcelona are not moving for him.

Barcelona shut the door on Inacio

According to Fabrizio Romano, there are no talks at all between Barcelona and Inacio. None. The club have flatly denied that any operation is underway, and Romano described the current level of contact as “zero”.

That matters because Barça are still widely expected to bring in another centre-back before the window closes. The need is real. The link with Inacio, though, is not.

For now, he should be ruled out as an active target.

Flick’s veto echoes Romero stance

The internal stance on Inacio mirrors what happened with Cristian Romero in the past.

Back then, Barcelona opted against a move for the Argentine, with Hansi Flick not convinced the deal matched his vision for the team. The same logic is being applied again. The coach and the sporting department are aligned: they do not see Inacio as the right fit at this moment.

Inacio has built a reputation as a reliable central defender in the Portuguese league. But Barça’s staff clearly see a gap between excelling in Lisbon and anchoring the defence at the Camp Nou. That step, in their view, is not guaranteed.

So the file is closed. At least for now.

Market still open – and the profile is clear

Ruling out Inacio does not mean Barcelona are done shopping in defence.

With roughly a week left before deadline day, the club are still exploring options. The equation could become even more complex if Alejandro Balde leaves. The left-back is another player who might be heading for the exit, and his departure would open up a second hole on the left side of the defence.

That’s why Deco and his team are studying players who can cover both positions: a left-footed centre-back who is also comfortable at left-back. Versatility, especially on that flank, has become a priority rather than a luxury.

Barcelona still have key transfer decisions to make in the coming days. Araujo is gone, Inacio is off the table, and the clock is ticking. Who steps into the void now will say a lot about how bold – or how cautious – this new Barça really intends to be.
