Barcelona's Defensive Plans: Top Shortlist After Araújo Departure

Barcelona have moved quickly to redraw their defensive plans, putting together a three-man shortlist to plug the gap left by Ronald Araújo’s departure.

According to Diario Sport, the Spanish champions have identified Aymeric Laporte, Castello Lukeba and Natan as their priority options to reinforce the centre of defence in the final weeks of the transfer window.

Araújo’s decision to swap the Spotify Camp Nou for the Premier League and Liverpool has ripped a key pillar out of Hansi Flick’s backline. Overnight, a position of relative strength has turned into a concern, forcing sporting director Deco and his recruitment team into action.

The response has been sharp. Barcelona have begun scouring the market for a central defender capable of stepping straight into a high-pressure role. From that wider search, three names have climbed to the top of the list.

Current Order of Preference

  1. Aymeric Laporte (Athletic Club)
  2. Castello Lukeba (RB Leipzig)
  3. Natan (Real Betis)

Laporte brings La Liga experience and a proven pedigree at the highest level, Lukeba represents a younger, high-upside profile from the Bundesliga, while Natan has emerged as an intriguing option after his performances with Real Betis.

The shortlist is set. The clock on the window is ticking. Now Barcelona must decide which defender will anchor Flick’s new era at the heart of their defence.
