Balraj Landa has traded the fringes of the English Premier League for a leap into the unknown in Hong Kong – and he sounds ready to embrace every bit of it.

Released by AFC Bournemouth in February, the 21-year-old attacking midfielder has signed for Southern ahead of the new Hong Kong Premier League campaign, completing a sharp change of direction that has taken him from academy football to non-league grounds and now to Asia.

The move did not come out of nowhere. Zesh Rehman, the former Fulham defender and ex player-manager of Southern, flagged the opportunity, and once the offer was on the table, Landa barely paused.

“The decision to come was a no-brainer,” he said. His first reaction? “What an opportunity to get.”

For a player rebuilding after his Bournemouth exit, the attraction is obvious. Landa sees Hong Kong as a stage and a test rolled into one.

“It ticks all the boxes for me: it’s a good platform to show myself in Asia, and to really get my name out there,” he said. “On the non-football side, it’s a chance to live on the other side of the world, to adapt and to survive by myself.”

That word – survive – hints at the scale of the challenge. No safety net, no familiar surroundings, just a new league and a new life.

Landa arrives via spells with Salisbury City and Dorchester Town, where he kept his career moving after leaving Bournemouth. Now he brings that grounding to Southern as a two-footed, “very technical and creative” attacking midfielder, the kind of profile that can quickly catch the eye in a league hungry for flair.

His journey started early. Local giants Southampton picked him up when he was just eight, setting him on a path through some of English football’s most competitive youth systems. The next steps will unfold thousands of miles away, under different floodlights, in front of different crowds.

For Landa, that is exactly the point.
