Bajcetic and Ramsay's Liverpool Exit Signals Changing Guard
Liverpool’s changing of the guard is gathering pace – and for Stefan Bajcetic, the next step may mean going home for good.
Bajcetic edging towards Celta return
Liverpool plucked Bajcetic from Celta Vigo’s academy in December 2020, paying just £224,000 to bring the then 16-year-old to Anfield. He quickly became one of the more exciting stories of the 2022/23 season, making 19 appearances under Jurgen Klopp and earning a new long-term contract that seemed to lock in his future on Merseyside.
That promise never quite turned into permanence.
A run of niggling injuries stalled his progress, and by last season Liverpool had shifted him out on loan, first to Red Bull Salzburg and then to Las Palmas in the 2024/25 campaign. He has not played a competitive game for Liverpool since May 2024.
Now, at 21, the midfielder stands on the brink of a permanent exit.
According to Faro de Vigo, Bajcetic has become a leading target for Celta Vigo, who are working on bringing him back six years after he left Galicia for England. The Spanish outlet describes him as “closer than ever to returning home” and says Celta “wants him back”.
There is a catch.
Celta’s move hinges on Liverpool agreeing to terminate the final year of his Anfield contract. Without that, a deal is unlikely to happen. Liverpool are thought to be weighing up the proposal, aware there is little chance of a significant fee and open to the idea of protecting themselves with a future sell-on clause if they cut him loose now.
For a player once tipped to anchor Liverpool’s midfield for years, the club’s stance underlines how sharply his trajectory has turned.
Ramsay heads out again – and this time it feels final
Bajcetic is not the only young player caught in Liverpool’s reset under new head coach Andoni Iraola.
Calvin Ramsay has also left on loan – again – but this one carries a very different tone. It looks like the end of the road at Anfield.
Liverpool signed Ramsay from Aberdeen for £4.2m in June 2022, a move framed as smart succession planning and much-needed cover for Trent Alexander-Arnold at right-back. The Scotland international, capped once at senior level, arrived with a reputation as one of the brightest young full-backs in the British game.
The leap proved brutal.
Ramsay has made just four senior appearances for Liverpool. Injuries and competition for places pushed him down the pecking order, and the club repeatedly sent him out on loan in search of rhythm and confidence – Preston, Bolton, Wigan, and then Kilmarnock last season.
Across those four spells he has managed only 26 games, with the most stable run coming at Wigan, where he featured 12 times in the 2024/25 campaign.
Liverpool have now confirmed that Ramsay, also 21, has joined St Mirren on a season-long loan. With his Anfield contract entering its final year, the move effectively signals the end of his Liverpool career, even though there is no option to buy included in the deal.
St Mirren get a right-back with something to prove. Ramsay gets what might be his last clean slate.
If he can rediscover the form that first drew Liverpool’s attention, Paisley could be the place where a career that stalled on Merseyside finally kicks back into gear.
