What Australia and Paraguay Must Do to Advance from Group D at World Cup 2026
On Thursday, Australia and Paraguay face off in their final group stage match at the World Cup 2026. One team will secure direct qualification to the knockout rounds.
Australia kicked off their campaign with a 2-0 victory over Turkey but then fell 2-0 to co-hosts USA. Paraguay began with a 4-1 loss against USA but bounced back with a 1-0 win over Turkey, even after being reduced to ten men.
New Tiebreaker Rules Affect Outcomes
This year’s tournament changed the tie-breaking order. Instead of goal difference being the second factor after points, it is now the head-to-head record between tied teams. This means the results between Australia and Paraguay hold more weight than before.
The USA have already locked in top spot in Group D, while Turkey are eliminated, leaving Australia and Paraguay to fight for second place.
What Each Team Needs
The winner of the Australia-Paraguay match will finish second with six points and qualify outright for the knockouts. The loser, stuck on three points, must wait and see if they rank among the best eight third-placed teams to continue.
If the match ends in a draw, both teams would have four points. At that point, goal difference becomes relevant. Australia currently has a goal difference of zero, Paraguay sits at minus two. If the draw maintains these margins, Australia takes second place, and Paraguay must rely on other results to see if four points suffice to advance as a third-place team.
How Head-to-Head Records Decide Ties
When teams share the same points, the ranking depends first on head-to-head outcomes between those teams. If multiple teams tie, a mini-league is formed using only matches among the tied sides, ranked by points, goal difference, and goals scored. Only if ties remain do overall group goal difference and goals scored come into play.
Additional Tiebreakers if Needed
If all previous criteria fail to separate teams, the Team Conduct Score (TCS) is used. This fair play measure deducts points for cards received:
- Yellow card: -1 point
- Red card from two yellows: -3 points
- Straight red card: -4 points
- Yellow followed by straight red: -5 points
The team with fewer deductions ranks higher. Should a tie persist, the FIFA ranking from June’s update decides who advances.
Ranking Third-Place Teams
The best eight third-place teams across all groups progress based on points earned. If many finish with equal points, goal difference determines who moves on. Generally, four points or more guarantees advancement, while three points demands a strong goal difference.
