Atsuki Ito Joins Bolton from Gent in Championship Move
Atsuki Ito’s Belgian chapter is over. The Japanese midfielder has left Gent to join Bolton, becoming the first to make the Belgium-to-Championship switch that many expected Max Dean to complete before the window shuts.
Ito arrives in England with a sense of unfinished business. When he joined Gent in 2024, there was genuine belief he could grow into a key figure. That never quite happened. The talent was obvious, the impact less so.
Before crossing to Europe, Ito had built a strong reputation with Urawa Red Diamonds in the J League. Across four seasons there, he delivered 19 goals and 15 assists from midfield – numbers that marked him out as far more than a simple link player. He arrived in Belgium as a central midfielder who could both create and finish.
His first year at Gent was solid without ever catching fire. Brought in after the departure of influential midfielder Hyun-Seok Hong, Ito was seen as a possible solution to that void in the middle of the pitch. He featured heavily, playing 46 games in all competitions, but returned just two goals and a single assist. Useful, but not transformative.
The second season told a slightly different story. Ito’s raw output improved even as his role shrank. Across 33 appearances, he found the net five times and added three assists, a clear uptick in productivity. Yet his minutes started to fade as head coach Rik De Mil reshaped his midfield.
De Mil’s preferences became clear. In the deeper roles, he leaned on former Cercle Brugge midfielder Leandro Lopes, often pairing him with Matias Delorge when fitness allowed. Higher up the pitch, Abdelkahar Kadri became the trusted option in the more advanced central areas. Ito, capable of playing both deeper and further forward, hovered between roles without ever nailing one down.
That’s where Bolton see opportunity. Ito brings genuine versatility, comfortable anywhere through the centre – as a holding midfielder, a box-to-box presence, or a more advanced link man. Technically, he is assured on the ball, and two seasons in the physically demanding Belgian game should harden him for the relentless pace and contact of the Championship.
He leaves Gent as a player who showed flashes rather than full command. Bolton are betting that a new league, a new environment, and a clearer role can unlock the version of Atsuki Ito that lit up the J League.
