Atlético Madrid's Bold Promise to Julián Álvarez: Hit 20 Goals

Atlético Madrid have placed a bold condition in front of Julián Álvarez – and it could redraw the map of his future as soon as next summer.

The Argentine forward, tied to Atlético until 2030, pushed hard to leave in the last transfer window. He wanted out. Barcelona came calling, but the club hierarchy slammed the door shut. No negotiation, no opening. Atlético rejected Barça’s offer outright.

Inside the club, Álvarez’s desire to go did not go down well. The stance hardened. If he was going to leave, it would be on Atlético’s terms, not his. Arsenal then emerged as a possible escape route, with the Spanish side more open to that move, only for Álvarez himself to turn it down.

Now the story has taken a twist.

A promise with a number: 20

Spanish journalist Pipe Estrada revealed on “El Chiringuito” that chief executive Miguel Ángel Gil Marín has made Álvarez a striking promise: hit 20 goals this season, and the club will lower his release clause.

Right now, that clause sits at 500 million euros. An almost untouchable figure. A wall, not a price.

Estrada put it bluntly: “Miguel Ángel Gil Marín promised Julián that he would lower the value of the release clause in his contract if he reaches 20 goals.”

If that clause drops to a realistic level, everything changes. The market opens. Clubs that previously had no chance suddenly have a route in.

On the same programme, journalists Jota Jordi and José Álvarez stopped short of fully confirming the exact condition, but their comments pointed in the same direction: Atlético’s position on a future sale is no longer as rigid as it was in the summer.

The hard line has softened.

From tension to praise

That shift has not come out of nowhere. The weeks after the window closed were tense between Álvarez and the club. Reports in Spain described a difficult period for the striker, emotionally and professionally, as he processed the blocked move and the fallout inside the dressing room and boardroom.

Time, and performances, have started to heal the rift.

Álvarez’s attitude in training has been singled out for praise. He has thrown himself into Diego Simeone’s demanding regime, and his standout display against Liverpool at Anfield has been a turning point in the internal perception of his situation.

Atlético lost the match, but Álvarez’s level and personality on that stage did not go unnoticed. Inside the club, the reaction was strong enough that Gil Marín picked up the phone himself after the game to congratulate the forward on his performance and his mentality, highlighting his “brilliant level” and “high morale” despite the defeat.

From anger over a transfer push to personal calls of praise from the CEO – the relationship has been recalibrated.

Central now, uncertain later

On the pitch, there is no debate. Álvarez remains a key pillar of Simeone’s project. He is expected to keep his leading role this season, carrying a major share of Atlético’s attacking responsibility as they fight on multiple fronts.

But the 20-goal promise hangs over the campaign like a quiet countdown.

If he hits that mark, the clause comes down. If the clause comes down, the suitors return. Barcelona, Arsenal, and others who stayed away at 500 million euros will be watching closely.

For now, Atlético lean on their Argentine star. The question is simple: when the season ends, will that promise turn Álvarez’s goals into his ticket out of Madrid?
