Atalanta's Strong Start: Sarri Prepares for Roma Showdown
Atalanta hit the new league campaign at full speed, and the Gewiss Stadium has already started to feel like a fortress.
Two home games, two wins. First Sassuolo were swept aside, then Bologna were beaten in far more dramatic fashion. The second victory came right at the death, Samardzic smashing in a late strike that sent the stands into uproar and pushed Atalanta level with Roma at the top of the table. Early days, yes, but the message was clear: they intend to be in that conversation.
Now comes the real examination.
Sarri sounds the alarm before Roma clash
From the Zingonia training center, Maurizio Sarri cut a realistic, almost wary figure as he looked ahead to the showdown with the Giallorossi.
“Malen is in great form and will be a problem for the entire match,” the coach warned, underlining where he sees the main threat. Atalanta have started brightly, but Sarri knows the schedule is already biting.
“We've prepared normally; we're the only team in Italy that plays five games in sixteen days tomorrow, but we're having a few issues. Our growth has undoubtedly slowed.”
That is not the kind of line a coach throws out lightly. It hints at fatigue, at minor knocks, at training sessions where the intensity drops half a notch because it has to. The football doesn’t stop, but sometimes the development does.
Respect for Roma’s title credentials
Sarri’s respect for Roma was unmistakable.
“They were strong and have become even stronger,” he said. “They will fight for the Scudetto until the end, and I'd be surprised if the opposite happened.”
It’s an assessment that adds extra weight to the meeting. Atalanta arrive with momentum and a perfect home record. Roma arrive with expectations and the look of a side built to last over a season.
Two teams level at the top, one coach warning of slowed growth, the other carrying the burden of title talk. The early-season table may be fragile, but the stakes at the Gewiss Stadium are already anything but.
