Aston Villa Signs Wan-Bissaka on Loan with Obligation to Buy

Aston Villa have reached an agreement to sign West Ham defender Aaron Wan-Bissaka on an initial loan, with an obligation to buy at the end of the season.

The DR Congo international has been granted permission to travel to the Midlands for a medical as Villa move to finalise the deal. The exact structure of the transfer has not been disclosed, though West Ham had previously been asking suitors to meet a £25m price tag.

Wan-Bissaka, 28, has sat out West Ham’s opening two Championship fixtures while talks progressed, a clear sign that a departure was edging closer.

West Ham cash in, but keep their captain

This is another significant outgoing for West Ham in a summer of heavy trading.

They have already sold Mateus Fernandes to Tottenham for £85m and Crysencio Summerville for £60m, two headline departures that have reshaped both their squad and their balance sheet. Amid the upheaval, captain Jarrod Bowen has committed his future to the club by signing a new contract, a crucial piece of stability for the Hammers as they adjust to life back in the second tier.

Villa’s low net spend, high activity window

Villa’s window has been just as busy, but in a very different way.

The Midlands club made one of the summer’s biggest sales by allowing Morgan Rogers to join Chelsea for £117m, a deal that underpins their current position as the Premier League side with the lowest net spend — around £110m once all sales are factored in.

That hasn’t stopped them from strengthening. Villa have brought in midfielders Johan Manzambi and Joao Gomes, while also securing Chelsea winger Alejandro Garnacho on a loan with an obligation to buy. Highly rated young centre-back Modou Keba Cisse has also arrived, adding depth and future potential at the heart of defence.

Now Wan-Bissaka is set to join that list, a specialist right-back dropping into a squad that is being aggressively reshaped but tightly managed financially.

Villa are spending, West Ham are selling, and both clubs are gambling that this flurry of business will look smart when the season’s pressure really bites.
