Aston Villa Signs PSG Starlet Mbaye and Defender Harwood-Bellis
Aston Villa have thrown down another marker in the transfer market, sealing a bold double deal for Senegal winger Ibrahim Mbaye from Paris St-Germain and English centre-back Taylor Harwood-Bellis from Southampton.
Mbaye, just 18, arrives from PSG for 55m euros (£47m), a fee that underlines how highly Villa rate one of Africa’s brightest young forwards. Harwood-Bellis, 24, joins after Villa finally broke Southampton’s resistance, agreeing a package that could reach £29m.
Villa will pay an initial £25m for Harwood-Bellis, with a further £4m in add-ons, after seeing two earlier bids knocked back. Persistence paid off.
Mbaye: World Cup record-breaker joins Emery’s attack
This is not a speculative punt on potential. Mbaye already has medals and records on his CV.
Last season he featured 31 times in all competitions as PSG successfully defended both their Ligue 1 and Champions League titles, contributing three goals and two assists in a star-studded squad. He did it on the biggest international stage as well.
The winger played in all four of Senegal’s matches at the 2026 World Cup and scored in a 3-1 defeat to France, becoming the youngest African player ever to score at a men’s World Cup. That goal turned him from prospect into headline name overnight.
His rise in Paris has been steep. Mbaye joined PSG from FC Versailles 78 in the summer of 2018, moved through the youth ranks and made his senior debut in August 2024 at just 16. Two years later, he leaves as a Champions League winner and a World Cup history-maker.
Born in France, he represented Les Bleus at youth level before switching allegiance to Senegal in 2025, qualifying through his father. Now he arrives in Birmingham as the latest piece in Unai Emery’s retooled front line, following the signings of Alejandro Garnacho, Johan Manzambi and Nicolas Jackson.
Villa wanted pace, direct running and end product. Mbaye brings all three, with time on his side.
Harwood-Bellis: defensive rebuild gathers pace
At the other end of the pitch, Harwood-Bellis answers a different question for Emery.
The centre-back becomes a key part of Villa’s attempt to rebuild a defence stripped of experience and leadership. After two rejected offers, Villa finally matched Southampton’s valuation, underlining how central he is to their plans.
At 24, he arrives with room to grow but enough senior football behind him to step straight into a demanding Premier League environment. The fee structure – £25m up front, £4m in add-ons – reflects both his current level and the expectation that he will develop into a long-term pillar of the back line.
Big arrivals after big exits
These signings do not come in isolation. They follow a summer of upheaval at Villa Park.

- Ezri Konsa, one of the cornerstones of Villa’s defence, left for Arsenal in a £55m deal.

Emery has lost core members of his Europa League-winning squad. Villa have responded by spending aggressively, reshaping the team rather than patching it.
Mbaye and Harwood-Bellis arrive into that tension: expectation fuelled by recent success, pressure sharpened by major departures. The question now is simple and ruthless.
