Aston Villa Signs Ibrahim Mbaye for €55m from PSG

Aston Villa have muscled in on Liverpool’s plans and struck an agreement with Paris Saint-Germain to sign highly rated winger Ibrahim Mbaye.

The 18-year-old, long touted as a potential heir to Mohamed Salah at Anfield, is heading for the Premier League – just not to Merseyside. Liverpool sounded out a move as they scoured the market for a right-sided forward, but walked away when PSG’s demands climbed too high.

The French champions shifted their price all summer depending on who was calling. Liverpool were quoted around €70 million. There was some belief that number could come down, but the club chose not to sink time into a lengthy negotiation and instead threw their weight behind a deal for top target Bradley Barcola.

That decision opened the door for Villa.

Villa pounce as Liverpool look elsewhere

Unai Emery’s side had tracked Mbaye for months. Interest dates back to January, when Villa first tried to tempt PSG into a sale. The answer then was a firm no.

Circumstances have changed. Mbaye wants regular minutes, and after a frustrating second half of last season in Paris, he pushed for a fresh start. PSG, faced with a player eager to move on, have now agreed to cash in.

According to David Ornstein of The Athletic, Villa have reached a €55 million agreement with PSG, helped by the strong relationship between PSG president Nasser Al-Khelaifi and Villa co-owner Nassef Sawiris. Personal terms are being finalised, with Mbaye expected to sign a long-term deal at Villa Park.

The Senegal international is not a panic buy. Reports describe him as a long-standing target for the Birmingham club, a player they have monitored closely rather than discovered late in the window.

Teenager with big-game mileage

For an 18-year-old, Mbaye arrives with serious mileage at the top level. He has already made 42 senior appearances for PSG and featured for Senegal at the Africa Cup of Nations in the winter and at the World Cup this summer.

His momentum stalled after AFCON. Minutes dried up in the second half of the campaign, sharpening his desire to leave and play a leading role elsewhere. Villa are ready to give him that platform.

Emery has been clear about wanting another winger to stretch games and add direct threat. Mbaye fits that brief and is expected to feature prominently in his plans once the deal is complete.

Leao chase fades, timing falls Villa’s way

Villa had also been in talks with AC Milan forward Rafael Leao in recent days, exploring another high-profile wide option. Those discussions appear to have hit a dead end, with indications that Leao has chosen Galatasaray as his preferred move after being left unconvinced by Villa’s contract proposal.

That setback has been swiftly overshadowed. The agreement for Mbaye lands at exactly the right moment for Villa, turning a near miss in one pursuit into a statement capture in another.

Liverpool looked at him. PSG tried to hold him. Villa are the ones about to put him on their wing.
