Arteta Downplays Contract Talks Ahead of Manchester City Clash

With the season set to open against Manchester City in Cardiff, Mikel Arteta cut a calm, almost dismissive figure when the subject of his own future inevitably came up.

Back in May, co-chairman Josh Kroenke made it clear that tying the Spaniard down to a new deal ranked as a major priority. The narrative since then has largely lived on outside the club, in headlines and phone-ins. Inside the camp, Arteta insisted, there is no hint of alarm.

"They [the fans] don't have to worry about any of that, because I want to be here. I am extremely happy," he said at his pre-match press conference, brushing aside any suggestion of tension. "I feel very grateful to work with the people that I work with and when we have the possibility, we will resolve that. And that's it."

For Arteta, the real battle right now is not at the negotiating table but in the transfer market. Squad shaping, not signature dates, is dominating his days.

"There is always another priority, I think!" he admitted, a line that neatly captured his current stance. The contract can wait; recruitment cannot. "And that's the way we have been treating it, I think because everybody feels comfortable that the time on the contract is not going to be an issue."

That sense of ease rests on one simple point: manager and club are pulling in the same direction. Arteta stressed that alignment again, making it clear there is no power play behind the scenes, no cold distance between the dugout and the boardroom.

"I think because my will, certainly, is to be here and I am very happy here. My feeling from the club is the same one," he said. "That is why everyone is doing things in a really organic way."

So the storyline rolls on: a high-profile coach, a publicly stated desire to extend, and no deal signed yet. But as Manchester City await in Cardiff and the transfer window continues to twist and turn, Arteta’s message is blunt — his future is not the drama he wants this season to be judged on.
