Arsenal Faces Travel Chaos Ahead of Champions League Opener

Arsenal’s preparations for their Champions League opener in Naples were thrown off course on Tuesday – quite literally – after travel chaos forced the club to cancel Mikel Arteta’s pre-match press conference.

The Arsenal coach was due to speak to the media at 7:15 p.m. local time in Naples, setting the scene for Wednesday night’s clash with Napoli at the Stadio Diego Armando Maradona. Instead, he spent the evening in transit.

A major technical issue with the UK’s air traffic control system led to hundreds of flights being delayed or cancelled across the country, and Arsenal’s charter was among those caught in the disruption. The squad is not expected to land in Naples until around 9:30 p.m. local time on Tuesday, well after the scheduled media duties.

Under Champions League regulations, managers must face the press before each game, but UEFA will not sanction Arsenal on this occasion, accepting that the situation lies beyond the club’s control.

Significant Night Ahead

The disruption comes on the eve of a significant night for Arteta and his players. Arsenal begin their latest bid for a first Champions League crown on Wednesday, with kickoff set for 9 p.m. local time in Naples.

Last season, they came as close as it gets without lifting the trophy, reaching the 2025-26 final only to lose to Paris Saint-Germain on penalties. That defeat still lingers, even if it was softened by a landmark domestic triumph: Arsenal finally ended a 22-year wait for a league title, winning the Premier League for the first time since 2004.

They arrive in Europe this time with that weight off their shoulders and momentum behind them, having opened the new league campaign with three wins from three.

The press conference may have been wiped out by airspace chaos. The sense of expectation around Arsenal’s European campaign has not.
