Arsenal Targets Man Utd Duo Scanlon and Ogunneye
Arsenal have stepped directly into Manchester United’s backyard, launching a bold bid to sign young duo Scanlon and Ogunneye in what is fast becoming an increasingly personal battle between two of England’s most powerful academies.
According to The Telegraph, the Premier League champions want both players in their youth ranks this summer as part of an aggressive overhaul of their development pathway. Arsenal have tracked the pair closely and believe they can tempt them away from Old Trafford on permanent deals.
This isn’t just opportunism. It’s retaliation.
United raided Arsenal in recent seasons to land Chido Obi and Ayden Heaven, a double swoop that stung in north London and underlined the pull of the Manchester club’s academy. Arsenal’s move for Scanlon and Ogunneye is being viewed as a direct response, a statement that they will not sit quietly while rivals cherry-pick their best prospects.
Loan spells and a turning point
Both players spent last season searching for senior minutes away from Manchester United.
Scanlon, 19, had a brief but valuable taste of League Two football with Swindon Town, scoring once in six appearances. Ogunneye, 20, saw more sustained action, featuring 21 times for Newport County before returning to United in January.
Those experiences appear to have sharpened their ambitions. The pair are now understood to be ready to leave Old Trafford permanently to accelerate their careers, and Arsenal have moved quickly to position themselves as the next step on that ladder.
The London club’s intent is clear. It is believed Scanlon has already agreed a two-year contract with an option for a further 12 months, underlining the level of commitment Arsenal are prepared to make to secure what they view as top emerging talent.
New academy era at Arsenal
This push does not exist in isolation. It comes on the back of significant change at the top of Arsenal’s academy.
Pascal De Maesschalck has arrived as the new head of the youth setup, replacing Per Mertesacker, and his appointment has triggered a more aggressive stance in the domestic market. Arsenal want a deeper, more reliable stream of young players feeding into Mikel Arteta’s squad.
Sporting director Andrea Berta set out the club’s thinking, saying: “We are delighted to welcome Pascal to Arsenal. He brings extensive experience from some of Europe's leading football clubs and has an outstanding track record in youth development. We are excited to have him with us as we continue to build for the future, developing young players and identifying the best emerging talent to join Arsenal on a journey towards professional football."
The message is unambiguous: Arsenal intend to compete hard, not only for trophies, but for the best teenagers in the country.
Paperwork, compensation – and what comes next
The focus now is on the finer details. Arsenal must finalise paperwork and agree compensation with Manchester United to complete the deals for Scanlon and Ogunneye and bring them to London.
They are not the only names on the list. The club are also expected to wrap up moves for other teenage prospects, including Vincent Joseph and Axel Donczew, in the coming weeks as this recruitment drive gathers pace.
For now, the intrigue sits at academy level, in boardrooms and on scouting reports. The real question, though, lies a little further down the line: which of these young signings will fight their way through the system and onto Arteta’s teamsheet in the years to come?
